It is my experience a 12v battery will eventually go flat and the vehicle will not start. If you drive the vehicle on a regular basis then your chances of being stranded are minimized but not eliminated. Sometimes the battery gives some warnings....sometimes it's totally fine one day and dead as a door nail the next.

Here in AZ we have a saying......."The battery dies in the summer but we don't find out about it until the winter."
Although the energy needed to turn a starter fast enough to get the engine to start is a lot more than the energy needed to close the connector to the battery array.

but because it has to connect the hv battery to charge it, it has a monitoring system. So if something goes wrong your car is going to send you a message that your 12v isn't being charged
That is the idea but doesn't always work in practice. We all have experienced delayed or missing notifications on our phones. The car sometimes doesn't tell you either. The 12v battery can literally be good one day and fine when last parked but dead the next morning.

Id3 owners in Europe are reporting problems with the 12V battery dying, and WV is trying to fix that with software update (which will have to be performed at the shop, car left overnight). e-tron forums are speculating if the HV battery charges the 12V as in some literature it says it does, but people still are reporting problems of the 12V dying. Also, in the e-tron at least, you’re not supposed to jump/replace the battery yourself but it’ll be a tow trip to the dealer...
Yep. Best laid plans don't always work. Automakers are notorious or trying to cut costs so when one part can do two jobs they sometimes build it that way.

Agreed. A LVB in a BEV is worked much lighter than an ICE vehicle.....especially a diesel version. Turning over a diesel engine is a chore for sure. Even so, they still wear out as proven by the battery in my C-Max Energi just a few weeks ago. The LVB also battery died on my brother's BEV. He took it for a test drive and liked it. Went inside to make the purchase (which was about an hour long process). Got back inside and it wouldn't start. Just timing. Never know when it's going to kick the bucket. Luckily the LVB was under warranty so they just replaced it on the spot and off we went.

I have a 2008 Acura MDX- great car but the battery always died. I was frustrated beyond belief. Did a bit of research and found out it was a faulty Blue Tooth module. Opened up the center console, took that BT unit out and battery hasn't died since! I never replaced it just because I never got around to it.
Good thought but my Mustang is too old for bluetooth. I like to say I have Sync 0, I missed Sync 1 by two model years (it came out in 2008).

That I think in a way has sort of helped me keep it this long. If it had an ancient 12 year old infotainment screen, instead of just buttons and that small green text screen for the radio, I think I would have felt the vehicle’s age more.

I get scared of this car on that aspect- it is so "tech". I have a Toyota Tacoma- with nada-not even power windows or locks. Has never been in the shop for anything. Having everything hi tech makes me pretty worried.

I agree and wish Ford would start selling new infotainment systems that you could put in old cars. I am not a fan of a lot of the third-party infotainment systems. I’d happily drop a couple thousand dollars to get Sync 4 in my 2006 Mustang, even recognizing that a lot of the features could not be implemented in an older car.

I don’t know if Ford has given it any thought or pre-planned it, but since the MME is so tech heavy, would be great to one day be able to upgrade it to say Sync 7.

I have a 2015 Acura MDX and my battery died two times and had to be towed to dealer. Much to my dismay, you couldn't shift it out of park to neutral without some complicated routine (had to take something apart on console) so it had to be dragged out of my garage and onto the flat bed tow truck. Ripped up the mats I keep on garage floor when it was dragged. It seems like I have to drive it about once every 2-3 weeks to keep the Acura Link active (like the Ford Pass) and keep the battery charged. We only use it for long trips or if we're hauling large items so it sits most of the time. And, they ARE great cars!

Can't be to difficult to do- like an OS upgrade.

I didn’t know such a thing existed until about a year and a half ago, but you can get a very slow charger for your 12v for situations like you describe where you still want the car but might not drive it for weeks/months. They are called trickle chargers. They are too weak to jump your car, instead they keep the 12v topped off.

I have one as I trickle charged the Fusion when we stayed in Florida for 3 months. I guess I should hook it up to the Acura. Edit: Well that was a good idea but Acura has the battery buried in the engine and not readily accessible (you have to remove the engine shroud and its still buried and hard to reach) so I can't connect the leads from the trickle charger. We'll just keep taking it out every 2-3 weeks and run it around the neighborhood. Wish the Acura had its battery accessible like the Fusion does (in the trunk). I hope the 12v battery in the Mach E is easy to reach if it has to be jumped.

I seem to have spent the last 40 years charging batteries on cars or bikes regularly....if they weren't my daily drivers.
During this current Covid crisis and working from home I've found that my 2020 Mustang V8 will have a virtually flat battery after 4 weeks of non-use. The trouble is you need power to drop the side window enough to open the door to open the bonnet. Hate to think what would happen if the battery went completely dead. Break the glass?
When the Mach E arrives the V8 will get even less use. Perhaps I'll just get in the habit of charging both cars weekly.

Haven't read the entire thread but my 2012 Focus EV has given me plenty of fits over the years with 12V battery problems. Initially, the modem was draining it dead overnight. It was supposed to alert me via the app when the 12V battery was low, but unfortunately it died before it could text me. Several updates finally solved the modem problem, but this winter the 12V battery went bad (8 years isn't too bad) and I was consistently coming out to a dead car if I didn't have it plugged in to my Level 2. I hope Ford has learned from this and allows the HV pack to keep the 12V from dying. I'm an early adopter so I put up with minor annoyances, but the average driver isn't going to be too happy to come back from a two week vacation to a dead Mach E in the extended park at the airport.

Laugh if the first software update just had spelling mistake fixes.
No, the first US OTA will not switch the cars to the Queen's English!
