I don't think there's a member here who hasn't been screwed by a dealership either by absurd markups, poor service, or general incompetence. Those dealerships are now begging congress for a tax break - the same dealerships charging 3-30k over MSRP and pocketing the difference.

"The issue could be “life and death” for some dealerships, Kildee said, and was never Congress’ intent. "

If only we could be so lucky.

This is what I am sending below; you can use the democracy.io link to write your own representatives. (https://democracy.io/#!/)

Dear ***,

I am writing as a constituent in *** to voice concern over the proposed tax breaks that are being considered for automotive dealerships, as part of a drive by Representative Dan Kildee of Michigan. These dealerships have historically used a last-in-first-out (LIFO) method to reduce their tax burden by nature of the incrementally higher cost of newer automobiles. Now, their inventories have dropped due to soaring demand and diminished supply, and they are requesting relief. My opposition is on two grounds:

1) They are able to reap the benefits of LIFO in the good times, but when it is no longer beneficial to them, it becomes my, the taxpayer's, responsibility to bail them out with a tax break? There is no free lunch for the average citizen, so it is unclear to me why these companies are provided free lunches (on top of their protected status as leaching middle-men codified in law). If they reap the benefits in the good times, they should be prepared to endure the consequences in the bad times.

2) These same dealerships coming to Congress with a sob-story are charging historically high markups on automobiles - ranging from a few percent over MSRP to 169% of the MSRP! This money goes directly out of the consumer's pocket and into the dealership's, bypassing the manufacturer that actually produces the car. Therefore, the dealerships are fleecing consumers with historic margins, all the while whining to Congress that they cannot afford their tax bill.

For market data see:

I implore you to look out for the common consumer, not the anti-consumer middle men that are damaging both the consumer and the manufacturers. Please vote no on any special tax breaks for dealerships.

Thank you,

***
