Discount Tire x Tire Rack - fear tactics

I was just at my local discount tire store near Atlanta and, after getting a quote with so many fees added to it, I asked what's the deal ordering through tire rack. The sales guy said that they own tire rack (that much is known), but that tire rack will ship old tires to you. Like 3-4 year-old tires. It felt like it was sleezy used car sales guy speech, but in any case, I wonder if this could be remotely true.
I was ready to buy the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4. But now I'm considering buying at Costco (they have the 245/50/19 in stock). Has anyone heard of this old tire tale?

I haven’t ordered from Tire Rack since the ‘00s. The tires back then seemed to be pretty recent. I think the guy at the shop was blowing smoke up your kilt.

There are more than a few people on this forum that use and swear by Tire Rack. I sure you will get some feedback soon. If they were truly selling dated tires, I would think that this caveat would be all over the internet. I concur with @HuntingPudel that the sales guy is trying to make a sale.

I’ve bought two sets of wheels/tires from tire rack in the last couple years. Both showed up mounted and balanced. Arrived via FedEx within 36 hours after my order. Both sets were very good new tires.

I've never had any issues with old tires from Tire Rack - unless they were specifically marked - and they DO track them.

I bought some Bridgestones this past summer that were marked on their site as an older manufacturing date or whatever it said at the time. They were, I think, a 3 year old tire - but TR had specifically marked them as such and they were heavily discounted (which is why I bought them, since I was just going to chew them up autocrossing anyway).

Oh ya, they still have some. You can see the "2021 Production" in the size listing.

I've never had any issues with any other tires and I've ordered MANY tires from TR over the years, for pretty much all of our vehicles. Mounted on wheels. Not mounted. Snow tires. Summer tires. All-seasons.

Honestly just sounds like sales tactics from the DT guy based on nothing at all or rumors/old anecdotes.

Used Tire Rack for years, without issue. Until my MME, Tire Rack was my sole source for my tires; I only went with Discount Tire because they price matched and I had better access to view how the MME was going to be lifted.

You can look up the info on the tires as well that tell you when they were made, so it'd be a pretty easy bluff to call-out.

They should match or beat what Tire Rack has since it's the same company. It's just a sales guy being an a**.

DM @Discount Tire about your experience, as that person is probably not who they want representing their brand. You had the skepticism to post here - think about how many people don't think to do so.

Went to Discount Tire near me to get tires for my son's car while he was on deployment. Knew which tires I wanted and the price from them was the same as Tire Rack. Add in mounting fees, etc but I would have to pay them if I ordered from TR.

I've bought many, many tires from Tire Rack over the years and never received older tires.

I don't know the exact count of how many sets of tires I have purchased directly from The Tire Rack and have shipped to my home but if I had to take a guess, at least 20 in the last 10 years if not more. They ship from their Reno NV warehouse and I get them within 1-2 days. None of the tires I've ever received were old as far as I can tell. None ever had dirt or dust on them and the tire stickers looked brand new as do the tires. I can't say enough good things about The Tire Rack.

Interesting you said that. The guy said "old and USED tires". Even the other associate had to intervene to say "not used, but could be old".

It was my point to him. I actually wanted the dws 06 plus originally, but it's sold out everywhere. I asked how could be old if they are literally out of stock everywhere. The guy insisted that the manufacturer would send an old tire to tire rack. Unbelievable.

Well, did you get the insurance? Because they added $260 to my quote for the road hazard insurance, which is free at tire rack and Costco.
Terrible impression, I won't try DT again.
