Interesting you said that. The guy said "old and USED tires". Even the other associate had to intervene to say "not used, but could be old".
Don't want to keep going over this but here is a set I just got 2 weeks ago. This is what all my tires look like when I get them from Tire Rack no matter what brand or model they are. The only reason the tread has some dirt on them is because they leave them out on the driveway when they deliver and I roll them inside the garage.

In my many years of buying tires at Discount/America's Tires I've never encountered a sales person like what you described.

In looking at the services between Costco and Discount/America's they would seem to be comparable as are prices. I would give the nod to Discount though as you can see them working on your car and are willing to let you go in to chat with the tech while they're working. When our cars are in for rotation/rebalancing I take the opportunity to check out the brake pads and wheel wells for any issues. I don't think you can do that at Costco Tires, at least not here in San Luis Obispo CA.

For the truck I ordered through tirerack for a coupe of reasons.

Couldn’t find KO2’s in 35’s locally so I was going to have to wait a few days anyway.

Tirerack provided an insurance/warranty with the sales price. The tirerack price was the same as everyone local for the tires without installation.

And then was able to get into a tires plus location a day or two before discount tire had a slot available.

Everything went very smooth. Tires shipped direct to discount plus (free shipping) and I just paid the fees to get them installed, balanced and aligned.

Would do it again just for the included insurance/warranty. Everything else was the same price as ordering locally.

Tirerack does sell older tires as well. They show you the date and discount them as such. I almost screwed up and ordered a set of 3 year old tires a while back, but it's pretty clearly stated when you go to check out. Like these 2021's. Remember they're now saying replace them every 4 years or so. Discount will look at the dated sidewall and suggest replacing these next year, even if 'brand new', Because they're only new to you.

Because of that guy, Costco got a $1300 sale. Costco also ended up ~150 cheaper.
I still wouldn't buy tires from Costco even if cheaper, I have dealt with Discount for years and had excellent service, even had them stay late one night for me to fix a flat at no charge. Add to that their reputation, basically a national chain and excellent and prompt service, I will go with them everytime. Don't want to wait in line at a Costco location for who knows how long if I really need them in an emergency while road tripping. But hey, that's just me, I'm sure you will do just fine. 😎

Tire Rack has 10 DCs to serve the entire country. Discount Tire has over 1,100 retail locations to serve small sections of each city separately.

Which one turns their inventory faster you think?

Besides, it’s not like tires are perishable goods.

Discount tire by far is the superior place to buy tires. Customer service is always top notch every time I have visited. I've purchased many sets and I've sent many people their way. Free flat repair regardless of where you bought the tires. They will beat any price guaranteed. Hands down the best tire store there is.

I was just at my local discount tire store near Atlanta and, after getting a quote with so many fees added to it, I asked what's the deal ordering through tire rack. The sales guy said that they own tire rack (that much is known), but that tire rack will ship old tires to you. Like 3-4 year-old tires. It felt like it was sleezy used car sales guy speech, but in any case, I wonder if this could be remotely true.
I was ready to buy the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4. But now I'm considering buying at Costco (they have the 245/50/19 in stock). Has anyone heard of this old tire tale?
Mostly False. Here is where it could have started. TR buys overstock OEM tires and offers them at cheap prices. Usually, these are a few years old. They do this on their website, and seeing as the number of tires discount sells, they likely see this occasionally.

They also put together a list of expiring date codes and offer those for cheap to certain dealers too

I’ve ordered all my tires from Discount Tire (online) and do winter / summer swaps with them on two cars. The pricing has always straight forward. If you know what you want, skip the upsell attendant and order online, and just go to the shop for the install.

if you live in the Atlanta area you can up to the Tire Rack distribution center in Doraville and pick up your tires. You can look at the build date on the tire. My Discount tire store will beat the Tire Rack price.

I forgot, if you pick them up at the Tire Rack warehouse, you save $40-$60 on shipping. I picked up two sets of tires. Very easy. Just back up to their loading dock, and they roll them out, sign for them, you’re done.

No. That is the first for me.
Go to Costco. They have your tires and they have experience with EVs.
Your other choice is your dealership, if you know them and trust them.

If you live in northern Indiana you can go to the Tire Rack headquartes and they install their tires there. They also test tires on their track there.
I've had several sets of tires installed there. Good installation price also.
