This is my first BEV, so just curious what the polite thing to do is.

At our local mall, there are a group of 8 parking spaces right up front that say, “Electric vehicle parking only.”

They also have a set of ChargPoint pay to charge chargers.

So my question is this: If you park there, do you have to charge?

I noticed that only about 1/3 of the cars were plugged in.

If you're in an electric vehicle parking only spot, I'm pretty sure the idea behind it existing wasn't to have a sweet parking spot - it was so you could charge. If you're not charging and still taking up a spot, you're a tool.

Yes, if you park there you should be charging. There SHOULD be signs that say parking while charging only. Do the charging cords reach all 8 spaces?

Don't park in a charging spot if you are not going to charge.
Just because some other inconsiderate person is doing it doesn't make it right.
The sign is an attempt to keep ICE cars from parking there.

If there are no signs saying the spaces are for charging, consider finding the owner of the facility and explaining they'd make more money with those signs.

A hotel we've stayed at has a sign for the EV spaces. However, because it's in a corner of the lot, if a large vehicle parks in that other side, they block access to one of the EV spaces. I pointed that out to the hotel manager, and suggested he put signs in a few spaces saying "Small vehicles only, do not block adjoining EV spots to the left" or similar. He's looking into that.

It's a real pet peeve of mine that so many charging spots just say they're for electric vehicles only, and don't specifically spell out that they're only for when charging.

I would hope that BEV owners would be considerate enough to understand that BEV parking spots with chargers present are fully intended to be used for charging! If you park your BEV there without charging you are as inconsiderate as an ICE owner parking there. My two cents. I don’t believe I have ever seen a reserved BEV parking spot without a charger but I suppose some places have them.

Parking in front of a charger without charging is known as ”ICEing” the space. It is not a compliment.

Signs should be more specific for sure. Perhaps they can have both ---

  1. Spots specifically for BEVs to charge (don't park there and NOT plug in)
  2. Spots reserved for BEV parking/non-charge (to give preference to "green" vehicles)

Its not there to be Conveinient parking for anyone. You park there to CHARGE AND LEAVE. But like another poster said, "you know this".

As stated, if there are no chargers, then it is just courtesy EV parking. Our local court and sheriff's office has 1/2 dozen spaces like this.
