When using Plug & Charge with Blue Oval at an Electrify America station, am I supposed to be charged the full price rate or the EA Pass+ rate (25% discount)? When I called EA a month or so ago, I was told I'd get the discounted Pass+ rate when charging via Blue Oval. But I tried it for the first time today and got charged the full price rate. I called EA back and this time they said I'd have to pay the full price rate. I didn't feel like calling back a 3rd time to break the tie.

P&C = full price!

There was a limited period of time where some EAP folks got the Pass+ pricing. But normal folks pay full prices.

Thanks for confirming. So if I want to get Pass+ pricing, I just sign up for an EA account myself. Then, turn off Plug & Charge when arrive at EA station and initiate charging manually via my EA account?

That seems to be the correct solution.

Yes, that's one way.

Another way is to leave P&C on, activate the charger with the EA app, then plug in when it says to. The first way ensures you won't be charged by Ford by mistake, but sometimes P&C is hard to turn back on.

Yep. Sometimes it's hard to turn off too, so best not to wait until showing up at a station to do it. Once off, it stays off until turned back on (and vise versa).

For those confused about why one way gets the Pass+ discount and the other doesn't, it's all about which account (wallet) is paying for the session. And the wallet is tied to the activation method.
  • If activating the session with the EA app, that's the EA wallet and EA Pass+ (if subscribed). That's the swipe in the app, or the phone tap to the charger while the EA app is open.
  • If activating with any FordPass methods, then it's the Ford wallet (no EA Pass+ discount). Plug&Charge, Charge Assist, and the FP app are all part of the FordPass umbrella, so all those activation methods are part of FordPass.
  • If activating on the charger with direct credit card tap or swipe, no EA Pass+ discount either.

However, if you go with this approach, you may want to check the charger each time to make sure it is billing you a the correct price. I've initiated a charging session with the EA app, plugged in, then had the charger to connect to the Mach E using P&C. It's unusual but I have had it happen more than once.

If I were doing this, I would turn off P&C whenever I was paying for a Pass + membership.

I was envisioning that P&C would be most useful for road trips. But, in my case, that's where I'm going to encounter mostly EA stations so will sign up for Pass+ which means I have to turn off P&C. :( Oh well, not a huge deal. Just wanted to confirm that I wasn't missing some option like "Enable P&C for everything other than Electrify America".

(That's assuming P&C works with other networks - for now it's only showing me EA in Ford Pass under Plug and Charge. Will try Chargepoint in a few days)

Tip - Turn on Pass+ the morning of your trip. Happens instantaneously. Then immediately downgrade, takes effect in 30 days.

P&C currently only works with EA.

We did a six-week coast to coast trip this Summer. Turned on EA Pass just before starting. It saved us about $150 during the trip. Turned it off afterwards and (for now very occasional use) I continue P&C.

Note that each card you add will be charged a processing fee... I added 1 card, then realized another card gave EV charging cashback and didn't notice until too late that each card added was like $4 "processing fee" ...

I did it this way and the issue I ran into was that some machines were "in use" according to the app but were empty in reality. The only way to resolve this was to call EA and have them manually initiate the charge. Moving to another station that was "empty" worked in some cases but others all were full or all were "in use" or "unavailable" or broken so calling was the only resolution unless I wanted to try P&C and pay full price. I didn't want to disable P&C because it worked nearly flawlessly when I had my free credits. My thought was that a fallback safety net would be to just plug and charge if there were issues with the app. I wonder if P&C were disabled if plugging into the station would have initiated the charge and/or cleared the "in use" issue in the app.

Just some thoughts!

Like others have mentioned, turn off P&C then activate the station via EA app OR just tap to pay with your EA pass if you have your card added to your Apple/Google/Samsung wallet to get the EA pass plus rate. I do the latter method and it works well nearly every time.

EA app phone tap works great, but I think it's really the EA app that needs to do the NFC tap, not the Apple/Google/Samsung wallets. If those wallets were what got activated upon tap, it would charge your credit card directly and wouldn't even know about your EA account (and thus your EA Pass+ discount). Your EA account has to be the one paying for it to get Pass+ discount, thus the EA app has to activate the session. Which fortunately the charger and phone seems to know to grab first upon phone tap (not the Apple/Google/Samsung wallets).

If not using P&C, I found the phone tap to be the best method. You don't have to select the right charger in the app that way. I did have to make sure my EA app was open and logged into though (although sometimes it's still running in the background).

I use my EA Pass+ membership out of the Apple Wallet. Double click the phone side button, Face ID, select the EA "card" from the wallet and then tap to the dispenser.

I do the same thing for ChargePoint too (select the ChargePoint 'card').
