AEM Electronics have swapped one in an S197 Ford Mustang, which is cool enough to get a shoutout from Farley himself.

Nice job, @aemelectronics! Love what you did with the Eluminator EV crate motor. Our accessories team is working on more exciting things ahead for builders. 👍 https://t.co/ILuI232EPi

The drive unit itself is powered by a Cascadia Motion CM200 inverter, with the whole thing controlled by AEM’s own EV ECU. A Tesla subframe was used to make room for the electric motor in the undercarriage of the Mustang, which utilizes custom mounts. QA1 coilovers help support the extra weight, while the inverters are located in the old spare tire well within a custom box.

As for the battery, that unit is made up of six LG Chem modules that give the Mustang a total of 16 kilowatt-hours of juice, which isn’t a whole lot, but there’s obviously room for an upgrade there. In this case, it seems as if AEM was trying to package everything nicely within the space available, and that compact battery may not provide a ton of range, but it doesn’t take up much space, either.

Neat project but kinda disappointing.

Needs a few things for sure:

Better looking. Make this a show car!

Dual motors! This thing has to be fast!

Way larger batteries. What’s it got? A 40 mile range now?

Like many similar projects on YouTube they contain small batteries probably because of cost. The car clearly has room for more batteries in front and rear to extend range.
The work is very cleanly installed and looks like it could be replicated by others or sold as a kit for others to install.

But it only need 1/4 mile range! 😂
Agreed race EVs have a small battery pack to maximize speed
Here is an example

It all totally makes sense.

I’m just hoping for an all out conversion that will turn the heads of the ICE Mustang people. With enough performance to give us a taste of what an electric coupe could be.

We need someone with deep pockets to take that project on. And start with a 2022 Mustang.

AEM is a cool story, got started in the late ‘80s in Compton, CA, right when West Coast rap and NWA were about to take over. They got huge with the import tuner crowd and kept on going. They were building/tuning 9-sec Civics when that was unheard of. I think Holley took them over but the original owner, JC, stayed on and kept working.

I spoke to him once back around ‘93 when I started to mod my brand new Sentra SE-R (google it before you laugh, it killed 5.0 Mustangs in autocross events). JC was nice enough to tell me that Stillen Motorsports had the best Nissan tuning/parts at the time and that I’d do better contacting them.

Glad to hear they’re still at it and into the EV game.

I used to want an aftermarket tuner to do this.

Now I have zero confidence that removing it won’t result in bricking my car.

FORD needs to work on a fix.
100% Agree

Looking at the Kia GT this needs to be addressed VERY soon by Ford

What’s everyone gonna do if the 2023 gets more robust parts and a 10 second limit. Hmmm

Definitely easier to “fix” it on a new model vs fixing the old ones.

At some point that will probably happen. It would probably make current GT / GTPE values drop.

It seems to me the latest recall is what ford was trying to avoid by the 5 second rule. My guess is a solution will only be on new models.

Maybe on the used values.

It depends on if it affects the “advertised” numbers. 480hp and 0-60 in 3.5.

If not, only the die hards would know the difference.

I’ll tell you. They’ll do the same thing 2010 Mustang GT 315HP 4.6 owners did when the 2011 Mustang GT debuted the 5.0 Coyote at 412HP - cry buckets 😭😭😭
