I realize cold weather causes a significant loss of range but when I first got my Premium extended range MME the estimated range with 100% charge was over 300 miles. I know thats not very accurate but it stayed like that for months until around August when it began dropping off. As if today a 100% charge gives an estimated 179 miles of range. Its obviously colder now than it was in August but only a little colder than it was in April. I mostly drive the same 12 miles to work and back on local roads each day. Any idea why the estimated range is so bad now? I thought it was only supposed to drop by about 20% in cold weather

30-40% loss in winter is typical. I bank on only having 2/3 my usual range. So from an EPA rating of 270 down to winter expectation of 180 miles.
Maldonado your GOM will be overly conservative. So while you may lose 1/3 of your EPA range, your GOM will guess even lower.

Not sure where you heard 20%. When it gets really cold you're looking at ~40% or more.

Drive south and keep driving south until the range is more to your expectations.

Then you already know the answer. That and the GOM is just a guess and can be ignored.
I get that. The 20% estimate wasn’t matching what I was seeing so obviously that was wrong. The odd thing was that the numbers satrted dropping the end of August when temps were still warm but not hot so I was using less AC. I would think that would have helped the mileage

Why on earth if your commute is just 12 miles do you even care? I mean in the winter my current ranger drops from about 23 miles to the gallon to about 18, but with a short commute it is what it is.

I read that northern states would see as much as 40% drop in range when it gets cold. I can't confirm that since I live in Arizona valley. Even here, I have seen the estimated range trend downward. I usually make note of the estimated range at 90% which is what I charge to most days. Here are those readings for a vehicle in the Phoenix metro area.
  • Late Sept 281-284 miles @ 90%
  • October 263-269 miles @ 90%
  • Nov 3rd: 274 miles @ 90%
  • Nov 15th: 263 miles @ 90%
  • Nov 23rd: 258 miles @ 90%
  • Nov 27th: 236 miles @ 90%
  • Nov 29th 7:30 am (51F): 226 miles @ 90%
  • Nov 29th noon (74F): 219 miles @ 90%
Really curious to see what happens tomorrow. Might drop into the 190s. If this is what I am seeing here in AZ then you guys up north must be freaking out. :)

Thanks for the data points. It was in the mid 30's most of the day here in NY (maxed at 42F) and 90% got me 198. I can live with this. I just wanted to be sure it was normal.

Could just be normal like you are thinking. Temp here this morning is 52F and I am seeing about a 22% drop in the estimated range display.

I just got the 21p22 software update to my car and it improves the range on cold weather i was at 83% SOC going in and it showed 151 miles after the update dealer charged to 100 and it now shows 230 miles I am in 32 degree weather so a big boost. that is one of the fixes in this update it the cold weather drop off.

I still wonder if it actually increased the range (kWh/mile) or if it just increased what the guess o meter guesses.

The only way to increase actual range would be to somehow increase efficiency. Not sure how a programming change would do that. Gotta get the electrons from somewhere.
