The other day I was going to a Drs appointment and I heard a loud crack. Turns out my windshield got the brunt of a large rock. When I first saw it, my thoughts were “hope I don’t need a new windshield and hopefully a chip repair will fix it.” Got it fixed yesterday and they did the best they could. The chip is about the size of a quarter. Turns out I’m gonna need a new one bc it’s right in my line of sight. Quotes so far including calibration are roughly ~$1200-1300. Makes my wallet cry a little bit. The picture is post repair, it was much uglier before.

The fill and seal systems wouldn't be clear enough?

They did fill and seal it. Thats the best they could do on it. With my vision when staring at cars in front of me, I see 2 of them.

That sucks. Since it is in line of sight you might want to check with your auto insurance to see if they cover a replacement.
I called insurance yesterday. If I go through with a replacement, it’ll go into my comprehensive claim history. I’d rather not do my premiums don’t go up.

I have had many glass replacements and it never affects my premiums. Why would you not use your insurance after paying for it year after year?

Your premiums shouldn't be impacted from filing a comprehensive claim. I work in auto insurance claims, 99.99% of the time there's no surcharge. I would go thru insurance to get it replaced. You pay for the insurance so use it.

A year ago after having my Mach E for a month I had a huge crack in my windshield. I was worried about my premium going up too if I filed through my insurance. However, my premium didn’t go up at all and I just had to pay my comprehensive which was $500. If you have USAA, which is a possibility seeing your name is Devil Dog, then your premium shouldn’t go up for filing a comprehensive claim. I’d be surprised if any insurance raises your premium for filing a comprehensive claim.

Comprehensive claims do not increase your insurance rates. Only collision and primarily if you are at fault. Use your insurance.

Insurance premiums can't be increased based upon comprehensive claims.

It’s pretty funny people say comprehensive claims don’t increase premiums when every insurance company I’ve had, have increased when a comprehensive claims has been made.

Never had comprehensive claim, but had uninsured motorist before. Claimed $2200, and paid back about $3000 in premium increases over 3 years. Changing insurance company didn't help, as soon as they pulled my history and saw a claim, the premium jumped up.

I have a big crack on my windshield because of a rock hit. Safelite quoted me $1870.
