I’m taking a trip to the Kansas suburbs of Kansas City (Johnson County) and there are no DCFC stations there. All the ChargePoint 50kW stations in the area are old Efacec machines that have been confirmed to not work with the MME, and they won’t be updated.

There are a multitude of free ChargePoint J1772 6.6kW public chargers in the area - basically just slightly slower than my Ford Mobile Charger on my garage 240v circuit. Can anyone confirm that this type of charger works with the Mach E? Not finding any Mach E check-ins on PlugShare.

Those should work just fine. They are simple level 2 chargers. I use a similar CP level 2 at work. Note that if they have two cords on the same post they will split the charge if both are in use, making it 3.3kW. So if you get to choose pick one that isn’t already being used.

I've used a few free J-1772 chargers and a Tesla Destination Charger with my Mach E. I've successfully used ChargePoint, SemaConnect, Clipper Creek, and at least one other I had never seen before or since.

That has not been my experience. I use a commercial ChargePoint station at work all the time with 2 plugs. Each plug gets 6kW regardless of whether the other plug is in use. It probably depends how it’s wired.

Have you checked if there are any Tesla Destination Chargers in the area that you could use? Sucks to have to buy the adapter, but it may be the quickest solution to your problem.

I wish ours were wired like that but they’re not. They definitely charge at half the rate if two cars plug in.

I have never looked. How fast are those?

I did test one of the L2 ChargePoints tonight and it worked just fine. I’ll be getting up at 5am tomorrow to plug in and then run back home. If that sounds bizarre, well yeah. But I gotta get my run in anyway and this should hopefully allow me to save an hour getting home to Wichita. Damn you Kansas City and your total lack of DCFC along I-35!!!

I have used several different Evergy ChargePoint chargers in KC MO for the last two months with my MME with Zero problems. They have charged at 7.4 KW an hour until it gets to 99.% and then slows. I had to set up a ChargePoint account and use my phone to unlock the charger. I can monitor the charging progress on my phone through the Fordpass or ChargePoint app. Total cost has always been $0.00.

Most Tesla Destination Chargers are wired for 32A, so that would be 6.6-7.6kW depending on if it’s 208V or 240V. They could be higher, but most aren’t.

This was my experience this morning. Other than them obviously being slow, it worked great for me.

Ran some errands this afternoon, and decided to top off (80%) at a free municipal chargepoint location, a nearby town hall, all 6.6k W. chargepoint L2 worked fine (upstate, NY). I use one of those small wallet cards that I still have from Volt or Bolt.

It brings to mind how sad the charge station obsolescence situation is for L2 stations. At home, I have 11 kW, where it matters less (just because I could), yet out on the road, short of an overnight hotel stay, 6 kW is now painfully slow.

They have 10 stations (New Hartford, NY, Town Hall, at a former Gander Sport store), all free there, free parking and free electricity. It was so well intended, and will work well for overnight town vehicles (there were none there). However, it is so painfully clear that they should all be 11 kW capable now, especially for shoppers and restaurant goers who might likely only be there for an hour or two.

Two months after buying the car, I have become a J-1772 free charging enthusiast. I "discovered" via PlugShare a bank of three open-access J1772s in a free public parking lot just one block from my office. Rather than charge last night in my garage, I parked Sonic at the public charger this morning at about 15% and I should be nearly topped off by the time I leave work. If I do this once a week I will seldom have to even use the garage charger. Even with a little garage charging and DCFC here and there, my gas savings could now approach $1,500 a year.

The units are old and decrepit - not ChargePoint or any brand I recognize and no app to monitor charging status (ha ha, too bad FordPass doesn't work yet) - but tough to argue with "free." Not sure how long the honeymoon will last, but currently there are so few EVs around town that I have never had a problem finding an available charger.

Not necessarily. It depends on if 1 or 2 circuits were run to that post and if there are any circuit or panel sharing configured. But yes, if given a choice and you have a group of double headed units then select a charging space where the other head is not in use. That will usually result in a full 32A charging service delivered to your vehicle. ?

Correct.

Much easier said then done.
Those units are 32A per plug assuming they each receive two double pole 40A circuits. A bank of 5 dual head bollard mounts indicates these may have their own 200A panel somewhere nearby and set up for full power with room to panel share for up to 18 plug total (total of 9 dual head stations). However, without seeing the service, we can only speculate. They may be circuit sharing which is by far the most common practice in use at the moment. This is because most facilities just don't have spare capacity to run so many charging spaces at the power levels you request.

For fleet, we can do it more easily. Those EVSEs are all 50A capable and we can wire them traditionally, circuit share or panel share. Usually we have 3 phase power available at fleet installations and that helps with capacity and usually they charge overnight so scheduling is key.
