Our son had a one-day layover in Charlotte, NC (airline pilot) today, so having owned an MME (Prem, ER, AWD) 1 whole day, we set out for a 2 hour trip to not only see offspring #2, but to stop and play with a real-live big-boy pants charger. We picked him up at the hotel and stopped at a EA charger at a Walmart. It had 10 stalls but 2 were under repair, as Plugshare stated.

We arrived with 62%.... perfect amount because if something popped a cork 2 hours from home we'd still make it back OK.

By the book: Plugged in, it set up the comm, FordPassed, and it began charging. It was loafing along at 34K til it hit 80% on the dot and dropped to 12K. 34kw isn't great but it didn't matter. We didn't need it and it was just a trial run, so leave it alone and learn. We got the proper messages, the numbers were all as correct as we could determine and we were on our way.

We were on the highway trip for 4H 17m and still had 24% charge left if you deduct the 18% charge, so we had no need to worry about getting home if the charging didn't work. We averaged 3.0mi/kwh with 99% highway driving. I'll take that for now.

It's my wife's car so she drove and I mashed my fingers on the screen to answer: What does this do? And: How do we get back to whatever the other thing was?

We discovered some of the finer points that the driver's display has to offer.

Impressions? I'm very glad we each ordered one. IT IS A COOL CAR. She (more or less) got a handle on the cruise control, lane centering, wipers, driving, etc., and I managed to learn to use the maps, change screens, get lost and then found, play music, A/C, .... etc. You can learn a lot by diving into the deep end for 4 hours.

Glad it went well.

34kW charging is too low, even at 62% SOC. It should have been over 80kW. Sounds like something was amiss with that charger.

Yea, I agree but we were on a different mission. The Great Charger Safari can wait till next time.

There was a Volt a few kiosks away doing quite a bit better. Owner was asleep so we didn't get to kibitz.

You sure it wasn't a Bolt? I don't think a Volt is capable of DC charging. A Bolt can, but it likely wasn't doing a ton better since the max DCFC speed for those is 55kW.
