Great write up - thank you!

I know it's personal choice but any additional thoughts on Iconic Silver? Looks great above and presume it looks even better in the sun? Really accentuates the lines and it's a uniquely shaded silver. I am debating between this and Shadow Black.

Why not use one of the front USB ports? They have lightening to USBA or USBC cables.

This is probably a very minority use case, but for people who use a medical device like a Cpap machine and who might want to sleep in the back seat on a trip, that AC outlet would be very helpful (no, I have not researched if that machine can run from the 12V lighter outlet or USB).
I don't want to waste a front port on a cable that's going to be sitting unused most of the time, but don't want to worry about it when it is used. if that makes sense.

there's probably multiple edge cases that a 120V would solve... I just don't think "mobile device charging" is one of them.

My thoughts on EV, Range anxiety, Charging, Tesla vs Ford etc:
  • I drove a 60-70mile range ford focus EV for 3 years as my daily driver and I've had my share of "0% battery - stop" moments. But I've never been stuck to a point I had to call roadside assistance. Charged at home using a 110v regular charger. But yes, I had a gas car that I drove when I needed to go on longer trips.
  • I've been driving Tesla M3 for about an year and a big fan of all things Tesla (also have Tesla Solar). I love all the software upgrades/changes they routinely do and I think this one of the biggest reasons Tesla is leading the way. I believe Tesla is more of a Tech company, trying to make vehicles.
  • Why I bought Mach-e: I didn't need to buy another vehicle. Also - Ford is not in my Top 5 vehicle manufacturers. But I think Ford has the experience and could make a better car than Tesla. I also usually don't buy brand new vehicles - as they loose value right after. But looking at the price tag, all the rebates being offered - It doesn't look like I'd be loosing a lot of money. Additionally, I plan to rent out this vehicle on a car sharing/rental platform > converting this more to a investment than an expense. If it wasn't for the rental idea - I would've NOT bought it.

First impressions comparing it to Tesla M3:
  • Driving:
    • Drive seems more firm/controlled than M3. I think I enjoy it more than on my Tesla M3. This could also be due to the ride height.
    • Propulsion Noises - I LOVE this. In-fact, I've researched about after market upgrades that can be done on Tesla that could add this feature. I miss hearing the engine rev noises and the response you receive as you accelerate. So YES - I love it and hopefully Tesla considers this in the future.
    • One pedal driving - this seems very similar to Tesla and other vehicles, don't see a big difference.
    • EV acceleration/torque: For some reason, Torque seems much stronger on the M3 and not so much on Mach-e. Even on my Focus EV, the torque was more powerful, but it was a very light vehicle.
    • One thing I didn't like about my Focus EV is the fact that it was a lighter vehicle and felt like driving a toy car. Acceleration and handling felt a bit 'out of control'. But on the Mach-e : I think they did a very good job in fine tuning the driving experience and I'm sure the weight and center of gravity helps this a lot.
    • From a few hours of driving - I think I'm starting to prefer the Mach-e Driving experience over Model 3.
  • Tech and Misc.
    • Compared to Tesla M3 - I definitely love having a instrument cluster in front of you. Not a big fan of having to look to the side for all the controls.
    • On Mach e - Most of the standard vehicle controls are traditional button, levers. I love this. From a design and the looks point of view, I do like the minimalist look on the Tesla - but it came in the cost of functionality/practicality. For ex: Vipers, Headlight controls, Home link buttons, Signal levers etc - I like the traditional controls.
    • Settings/Options - If Tesla has 30 Settings to setup, I believe Mach-e has 3000 setting options to choose in the center control/infotainment Sync 4 system. As a Tech enthusiast, I like being able to control everything and seeing this many options. However, it feels a bit overwhelming and I think it will take a bit to get used. I could see most drivers not liking it. May be they can introduce a "easy/minimalist" environment with default basic settings and then an Advanced mode for those who choose.
    • Setting up the Ford Pass app is pretty straight forward - but I think Tesla wins in this category. It does take some effort to link the vehicle, then link your phone and setting up the phone as key - process on Tesla was much smoother. However, it seems like the Ford Pass app shows more details than the Tesla.
    • *** On the Tesla you have to choose between showing Battery level as a percentage or remaining miles (but not both.) On FORD,

This is perfect for my brother. I sent him a link to this thread. He is driving a 2017 Focus Electric (his first BEV) and is now considering something larger because his kids are starting middle school. He is looking into the ID.4, Model Y and Mach E. This would be a great read for him.
Thanks. ?

Good write up. I appreciate the comparison to the Tesla.

One thing I will note is that photos posted here and everywhere else I've seen seem to make the front and rear cargo areas look bigger than they actually are. That was really only my very small disappointment when I took my test drive. Don't get me wrong, the frunk would hold plenty of ice and shrimp, but it's probably not gonna super useful for most applications. The rear cargo area will be adequate - I wasn't shopping for a Suburban after all - but it just isn't as big as the pics make out.
I may have taken the trunk with a wide angle on my phone. But I took another picture with some Costco groceries loaded, will add it to the original post.

I see that my older 2014 Fusion Hybrid still has one feature that the 2021 Mustang Mach-E dos not have (but should): a 120 VAC 15 A outlet. Other than this, your car is beautiful, and I wish you many years of fun with it.

To Ford engineers: bring back the AC outlet for the back seat riders that need to charge older iPhones and other portable devices that do not run on the USB 5 V. The 2009 Escape Hybrid was the first to offer it, and I have not seen any other vehicle brand offering it. Just add it to the 2022 Mach-E.
I do agree that having a built-in inverter that gives 120V would be great. Without knowing much about mechanical & electrical side of things - most combustion engine 120V ports are powered through the regular 12v battery. For EVs, I guess you could use the 12V battery or *may* be use the Vehicle battery pack - but I dont think there's any Full EV that gives this function through the Lithium batteries. I believe having this in your Fusion hybrid is similar to having that in a combustion engine vehicle.
For EVs (from what I know), if your 12V battery is dead/low (like a regular car) - you pretty much have an in-op vehicle. Even if you have a 100% charged Lithium battery - the 12V battery is required for the vehicle computer and other critical components to work. And I dont know whether the 12V battery is re-charged similar to a combustion engine vehicle or some other means.

Wow! I've used Turo before but as a customer, not as a vehicle provider and have to say that I've never trashed the car or left it smelling like weed!

(I even paid the parking ticket I got while renting LOL.)
I would be like you if I rented one from Turo. My buddy has had some horrible experiences however. He uses it as a second business. He has 3 cars he rents out on there in the LA area. 2 have been stolen before, but he was able to recover them due to GPS tracking. There are tons of YouTube videos of people talking about their bad experiences. Just like anything though, it can't ALL be bad. The bad issues get highlighted of course.
Some folks just don't care about damaging things they don't own.
For all comments related to TURO - I agree with all of you. Its a business, that involves a lot of risk and you have to look at your vehicles as "equipment" that you put into your business. And it is also true that TURO is just a platform that tries to make money from us (vehicle owners) and the guests itself. They try to keep their hands off from most things they can.

You will be paying for an additional insurance through Turo for claims/incidents that happen when the vehicle is rented out. And there are Tiers you can choose to how much of a percentage you are willing to give to Turo for that insurance - from your rental fees. And yes, since everything is remote/pictures/documentation - you have to take pictures and follow the process to get reimbursed and claimed. IF you follow all that - I think you can recover easily.

All cosmetic damages, cleaning, smell - I've had a few and each time I've been able to get reimbursed for interior detailing. Once about $200 due to smoke odor and ashes on the carpet.
I also had an accident on my Tesla back in November - my Turo insurance had a deductible which I didnt want to pay - So I claimed the repair through the 3rd party that was involved in the accident (not my renter). Since everything was documented including a Police Report - this was not that difficult. Everything was paid including for a rental car during the repair - through the 3rd party insurance.
So it all depends on how much of work you are willing to put in, how much you want to pay (cut profit) for fees/insurance. I wouldn't be putting the vehicles on Turo if I was not ready for all this. I expect the worse - that helps in dealing in these bad situations.
I don't think any Car Owner wants this kind of abuse on their vehicle, but a "business owner" has to be prepared and I think you have to be one if you rent out on Turo.

Turo has given me the luxury of buying (and convincing my self) the Tesla and now Mach-E, so I could have the benefit of driving and enjoying them when they are NOT rented. Otherwise, I consider them part of the business.

I think its a unique color and looks nice. I should've gone with the bigger wheel though (without being cheap). I did see another grey (dont remember what grey), that looked nice as well - but thats a more common color choice.

Yeah, that can of worms has been opened ad nauseam here. The HV battery keeps the 12V battery charged, but it still can die.

This is wise and I think you are doing it the right way. Many people who try out Airbnb or Turo or something to rent one of their personal possessions are under the mistaken impression that they are "lending" the item like they would to a friend, and that they are getting risk free money. When you rent or lease something, it isn't "yours" anymore. You may hold title to it, but the user gets to do what they want with it, within some reasonable boundaries of wear and tear (which may not agree with your personal boundaries of wear and tear).

And as a business, most courts will generally side with the consumer. We all expect that when we rent from Enterprise, or stay at a Marriott - "customer is always right'" - but it is a big surprise to some people when they switch sides of the table.

As long as you have a business mindset about it, and understand that your equipment will get worn out at a different rate than if you were using it yourself, and set aside enough cash to cover your risk, then all good.

Which one is easier to get in and out of? I drove the dealers Mach E this weekend and I was disappointed at how short the door height is. Also the width between the a pillar and b pillar is also very tight. I can easily get in and out of an escape, explorer, and even my 17 Mustang convertible. But I felt like a contortionist trying to climb into the mme. I ordered my Grabber Blue 1st Edition on reveal night and it is built and shipping but not sure now how much I want it. Which is really disappointing because everything else about it was almost perfect.

If you get it and then planning on making the final decision - I think you will end up getting it.
I didnt really notice any issues with getting in and out. But Tesla does have the feature where the seats move in-out of the way and adjust to your setting as you get in and out. But this is also very subjective...

From what I saw in the owner's manual the Mach E has that courtesy setting too.

If you get it and then planning on making the final decision - I think you will end up getting it.
I didnt really notice any issues with getting in and out. But Tesla does have the feature where the seats move in-out of the way and adjust to your setting as you get in and out. But this is also very subjective...

the "old man seat move" - page 79 of one of the manuals. Ford's been doing this forever.

    • *** On the Tesla you have to choose between showing Battery level as a percentage or remaining miles (but not both.) On FORD,
    • Charging Network - This is an area that Tesla is dominating at the moment. With the overall process of charging (stop>plug>charge>unplug>go) and the availability of Charging stations. Ford and other manufacturers are try to implement a similar process, but it is difficult as they rely on public charging stations open to all.
    • ELECTRIFY AMERICA - With your Mach-E purchase (from what I see in my account), you get complimentary membership to Electrify America for 2 years with 250kWh charging bundle. That approximately translates to about 3-5 Charging sessions.

More than happy to answer any questions from forum members. And if you are around LA or planning to visit LA, feel free to reach out to me if you would like to rent it for a few days.
