Using abetterrouteplanner.com, I mapped out a round trip from NJ to Charleston, SC. I was stunned to see that the 1346 mile trip would cost me $230, until I started looking into the math. It was computing a 99 cent/minute charging fee - which is EA's rate for OVER 125kw charging. The standard battery tops out at 115kw, so the price should have been 70 cents per minute. At first I thought that maybe it was computing at 150kw so the time would be less, making the final cost just about right anyway. Lo and behold, that's not what's happening. The summary said that the total charge time would be 4:02 (242 min), computing with a 2.99mi/kwh factor over 1346 miles. doing some math:
1346 mi / 2.99 mi per kwh= 450kwhr
450kwhr/242min = 1.86 kwhr/min
thus, to compute the kw draw:
1.86 kwhr/min * 60 min/hr = 111 kw
So, accounting for rounding they were correctly computing the time to charge at 115kw, but the fee was wrong. That means the cost should have been computed to be $169 instead of $230, which is still high. BUT, if you pay the $4/month fee the rate is 50 cents per minute for a total cost of $121. That's still twice the computed rate for tesla ($63), but much better than the original computation of $230
