For those that know: is the grille camera only for 360 view, or does BC use it too?

I had a weird experience wherein handsfree bluecruise refused to engage, but hands-on auto lane centering with ACC worked just fine. This is on exactly the same roads on which handsfree BC worked like a champ even in soupy fog the week before. I tried cleaning the windshield in front of the camera by the rearview mirror, but that didn't help. I was driving with the sun at my back, so it wasn't a case of being blinded by glare or sunlight. On the way back 2 days later and out of desperation I pulled over again and cleaned the grille camera - and magically handsfree kicked in for what was left of my return drive.

Coincidence, or is the grill camera used for handsfree bluecruise?

I would think it would use both and blend, or compare at least, the 2 images. Or even use 1 as a back up?

I have no proof of this, just thinking out loud

BlueCruise uses the radar sensor in the lower grill and the camera in the windshield, but not the camera in the upper grill.

Is that definite? So they put the washer just to keep the 360 camera clean?

This would be easy to test with a piece of tape. It shouldn't make a difference, but perhaps any error state in the IPMA disables BlueCruise.

It definitely doesn’t use it, but as @Mach-Lee said, it’s possible that BlueCruise gets disabled for safety when any camera obstruction is detected. I guess that will have to be tested.

I’m on a road trip and my front grill camera caught a rock in KS. I don’t think BC uses the camera as it’s been fine since.
