My Model Y order doesn’t have a delivery date set yet but I am betting it will be late February or early March. What do you think about my plan to keep both cars and then sell one?

I hope you enjoy your new car when it arrives.
The way used car prices are headed that seems like a dangerous plan. Six months or a year ago I would've said go for it.

For those waiting on orders, what does the Model Y price drop to $52,990 make you think?

It makes me think about buying a Tesla MY and choose which to keep.

My situation has been kind of crazy and this is where it stands now.

I have an MMEGT on its way to Portland, OR. It has been stuck in Missouri since early November. I’m told it is somewhere in Montana now. I ordered the MME in April 2022 which should have grandfathered me in for the old tax credit rules. Except the IRS has, I believe incorrectly, interpreted the law to require “purchase” by 12/31/2022 for the credit. Of course, I won’t meet that requirement. In the meantime, I am doing all I can to get the IRS’s attention about their error. I may not get the tax credit for 2022 so I have to consider that I will have to pay $67k+ for the MME, with no credit.

Alongside comes Tesla, with the price reductions, which is a dilemma for me. So, I decided to order a MY long range that ends up just shy of $55k and after the tax credit brings the net to about $47.5k. There is some risk that the Tesla delivery will not be in time for the March IRS modifications to the tax credit and I won’t get the full amount, but I’ll get some for sure.

So, I will probably get the MME in early February, and I will take delivery. I will keep it until the MY arrives and then decide which to keep. Without having either vehicle in my possession now I can only say for sure that I have always preferred the MME styling, in and out. I ordered a blue MY just to try to be a tad different. To me MYs are not grotesque, just not as nice as the MME.

I think the build quality and ride has improved on MY and that may help me decide. So as much as I want to want the MME it has been such a long and unpleasant process. That includes possibly not getting the 2022 tax credit simply because the MME sat in a railroad yard or was in transit since it was built on October 19. Compare that to a, so far, easy process and buying the MY for $20,000 less.

If I sell the MME and keep the MY I suppose I risk some market depreciation, but who knows with the 2023 prices of MMEs so high. And even if I had to sell for less than the MSRP I bought at I don’t think the loss would be more than the $20k savings I am guaranteed.

So that is my long-winded explanation of where I stand today. Waiting for the first of my two cars to show up.

I’d welcome anyone’s thoughts on my approach.
You’d lose a lot of money with this approach, MME values have tanked a lot

I canceled my '23 MME Premium AWD the other day after the MY that I ordered on 1/13/23 got scheduled for delivery in Portland. Looks like it will take 11 days from order to delivery for the MY. Whereas, I've been waiting for the MME since 3/17/22 order. The update from Ford was that it was still in production since 12/22/22 with no updates since. Even with private offer, it was not enough to sway me to keep the order. It's been a long journey with Ford and it wasn't great.
Wow.. Same build date and I'm leaning toward the MY because I'm getting zero communication from Ford, zero info from live agents, zero info from chat. Just that it was built on Dec 22nd and that's it. I can have the red Y I like in a week.
I like the MME better but between no communication from ford, no more price advantage, poor charging network, sleazy dealers - I'm being pushed towards Telsa more and more every day..

I did a recent back to back runs on MY and MME. MME has a much better suspension and ride when compared to MY.

MY ride was rough and also has more cabin noise. You will feel the road bumps a lot more.
I had a GT, I currently have a select, I test drove MYLR last weekend and renting one soon, the biggest thing for me was how smooth suspension was on the MY, Mach E, has one of the roughest, worst suspension and between me and my friends, we own 6 Mach Es, Select, Premium, CA RT1 and GT, we all agree that MY has a better suspension.

Posted in several places that I feel the exact same way. But I go a step further that if Tesla doesn’t make it in time, I’m giving up and going ICE. Same build week. Delivery end of Jan on the MME. Jan-Mar window in the MY.

I am the same - my incoming MME has been delayed 3 times now.
Last time I checked with Ford chat, it was in KC, MO.

Looking like early February.

OTOH, my order is for a Premium base RWD that gets under the $55K IRS max MSRP by a mere $25.

I got very lucky with a $6500 PCO, $7500 tax credit, $2000 Options incentive, $2000 state rebate, $1000 Ford Pass points VISA conversion from Lightning purchase in 2022.

Net cost before TTL: $37K,

Best buy even compared to Tesla's MY.

What’s the options incentive? I have PCO but my sticker is over $55 bc I got AWD. So without the $7500, Tesla is just too much better of a deal.

Ford Options = balloon finance w/ ownership + lease terms.

Some states get incentives: $2500, others $2000, some $500, rest none.

Ask you F&I manager for the incentive for your area at the time of order (not delivery).

MachEs now being advertised below MSRP in a lot of places. Including under $55k versions.

I’m following pricing via manual searches as I struggle with the fact I have a MME arriving soon and a MY that’s supposed to get here before the tax hike, and I’m gonna have to choose.

$2500 off MSRP on Selects and Premiums in advertisements. Bigger discounts on GTs.

I think in about two weeks or a month we’re going to see some statistics and news articles on how consumers have responded to tesla, both in their tesla purchases and in their MME/Ioniq/Bolt abandonment.

(Note: There are also still plenty of large volume dealers with really aggressive sales departments charging $5k ADM. but from what I’m hearing elsewhere in this forum that caves to MSRP the minute you turn your back. Denial is strong among some dealers, but the smaller ones who can’t afford it have gotten incredibly realistic in literally a matter of days.

Must be a Texas thing.

So Calif dealers are charging $7K ADM on their customer abandoned MME (Selects & base Premium).

Just did a cursory glance. Texas, Tennessee, Indiana, Ohio, North Carolina… stopped looking at that point. It’s about 70/20/10 for ADM/MSRP/Less-than-MSRP in the market right now, but even California is showing excess inventory and there are lots of posts here where even in CA people walk in, offer MSRP, leave, get called back with an MSRP offer.
We are now firmly in territory that resembles the pre-ADM ICE market. Anybody who pays MSRP or more, that’s a choice and a reflection of your negotiating skills not the market value of the vehicle. And you will pay the price at resale.

Your situation compared to mine is indicative of the frustration and confusion of MME buyers that placed orders last year. Things often don’t make any sense. See my post #203 for my current plan.

My order was later than yours in April. Yet I get a build in mid October while you still are waiting. My delivery to Portland will likely take 4 months since production and three months since it arrived in Missouri. For yours you may never know about delivery since you cancelled.

My Model Y order doesn’t have a delivery date set yet but I am betting it will be late February or early March. What do you think about my plan to keep both cars and then sell one?

I hope you enjoy your new car when it arrives.
Like the other posts, I would not buy the MME at current prices and hope to sell later. You will be underwater. Ford has to drop their prices. Tesla has waged a nuclear price war with other EV makers. I saw an article from a Morgan Stanley analyst that said this type of major price reduction will eliminate many competitors and reset market. Ford has to respond. Do not buy at the inflated price.

More than likley nothing will happen from Ford until the new guidance comes out. You can bet GM and Ford are lobbying so hard to the IRS right now to raise the limit to 80k. If the IRS doesn't listen then Ford will probably be forced to act at that point. Awkward period in the market right now

That's correct.

If it wasn't for the $6500 PCO model year transition and $7500 tax credit + $2000 Options + $2000 state rebate I'd skip on my incoming MME.

I got my MY already (11 days from order to fulfillment after price drop). I haven’t looked back since. It is kinda fun now actually learning how and where to charge and enjoying the EV experience. I honestly don’t know when I would have been able to experience this with the way MME orders are being handled.

Just marking time with my '22 Mach E Select, until the 2026? MME GTPE with V2L and V2H with a bigger battery and no performance limits comes out.
