Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an EV cable with an inductor portion, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on March 9th, 2015, published on October 18th, 2022, and assigned serial number 11476044.
As it continues to invest heavily in electrification, Ford has also filed a host of patents related to EVs and EV charging in recent months, including one for an EV haptic feedback system, an EV charging station guidance system, a roof-mounted HVAC system for EVs, a hands-free charging system, a portable high-voltage EV charging system, and an in-flight charging system for EVs, while the automaker has also been working on a cable that would deliver much faster charging times than anything that exists today. Now, this new Ford patent continues that trend by introducing an idea for an EV cable with an inductor portion.
In many electrified vehicles, power moves from a battery through cables to a DC or DC boost converter, then to a DC link. Boost converters are also considered variable voltage converters in some examples, but those employ a relatively large inductor, which can be costly and difficult to package.
That’s precisely where this Ford patent comes into play by introducing an idea for a coiled portion providing an inductor located within the cable that’s connected to the EV’s battery pack. The coiled portion is wound around an inner sheath, both of which are contained within an outer sheath. The idea here is to both simplify the cable’s design and provide a more reliable flow of power from the battery to the electric motor(s), which is something that makes quite a bit of sense as EVs become more and more capable moving forward.

Something to keep in mind about corporate patents...Many if not most of them are never used except for corporate bragging rights about who's portfolio is biggest, or to keep from paying for using a technology if you ever decide to use the idea. They don't necessarily mean you'll see it in their products soon.

I worked as a developer for IBM and we made sure the company had the most patent filings of any corporation, year after year.
