Issue was contaminated battery cells. With new Ford CEO emphasizing minimizing warranty/recall costs I would expect them to take a very careful look at Mach e batteries. For people saying ICE cars have fires and never get much notice I would say EV issue is very different. First there are many fewer than ICE and the Kuga 27000 recall and similar volume Kona EV recall are significant. And fires are a function of overheating when charging - in your garage, typically overnight, typically not easily detected. ICE fires happen engines are hot.

Personally with the push out to 2021 for delivery (I had a first day, low number reservation, now not scheduled to build until Dec 22 week) the excitement of this car is wearing thin after year and watching Ford struggle with the order process. It may actually be a good thing the production is being pushed out - resolving a fundamental battery pack issue is not an OTA correction.

The positive, not Ford's fault since 3rd party supplier and supplier will most likely assume cost.

The negative, really looks bad and not very promising for a company trying to make a splash in th PHEV and EV market

The same battery contamination issue is currently affecting BMW models that have been around for years. Don’t know if the batteries come from the same suppliers as Ford of Europe was using For the Kuga PHEV.

It sounds like battery contamination is something the EV industry needs to identify and address.

No mention of Mach-E and Ford is shipping them now so must be completely different battery and supplier for Mach-E and I'd guess Ford is checking them out for same issue.

Ford can't afford to have Mach-E have same issues. It is Mustang Brand they are fooling with vs. something called a "Kuga".

I believe both come from CATL whereas the Mach-E come from LG Chem. At least the one silver lining is that Ford was made aware of the issue and took action right away. They didnt push production of a problematic vehicle just to meet CO2 emission standards, meet delivery numbers and pretend like nothing is wrong.

You mean like they did with the Focus and its bad transmissions?

So when is Ford starting production of the Mache. I don't want a battery that will start a fire in my garage. Maybe the launch should wait till 2022

More than a week ago...already being built using batteries from a different manufacturer than the Kuga.

I owed a 2012 Ford Titanium Focus. I had three clutch packs installed, didn't help and finally the PCM went out. I got rid of the car as fast as I could, and lost 20,000 doing it.

I'm going with the Ford Option pricing to get the guaranteed resale.

Battery warranty is 100,000 miles so not worried about problem, if it occurs, being addressed.

The EV industry as a whole has a long way to mature. Battery issues are part of that process as most vendors have battery problems at some point: Chevy is dealing with the Bolt now, Hyundai is recalling 77k batteries in their Kona, Tesla had their issues 3-5 years ago. Ford will be no different. Those are the risks of being an early adopter.

The BMW models recalled for contaminated batteries are models that have been out for years, and only the recent production has been affected. So whether a supplier’s battery production is feeding a brand new model or an existing model both old and new would be affected the same.

The good news in the story is they found the problem and the problem wasnt a design issue with battery venting like some were speculating.

The supplier will have a huge bill to pay to both Ford and BMW.

Almost same scenario here. Owned one for 2 months and traded it back in to the dealer.
