Interestingly - this also confirms what many said - Tesla is NOT best of all in autonomous driving. There are other players that have good technology. My personal experience with Tesla autopilot is it will disengage in many cases forcing me to take control fast. Musk mentioned Tesla will have Level 5 till end of this year. This is really a BS, and Level 5 means cars without pedals and steering wheel. We are years from this (in the best possible case).

For now, I personally need reliable ACC with line centering and start-stop function. Tesla and other can supply this w/o an issue.

For those interested in this, Tesla used an EyeQ3 chip in their cars from 2014-2016 before switching to nVidia. If you have driven a Tesla from those times then you have an idea of what MobileEye is capable of and this newer version is well more advanced than that was.

Ok, last one since I am really geeking out today. If you want to see what the EyeQ4 chip can do in initial form, there are several videos out on Nissan ProPilot 2.0 which uses the same chip.

Technically, the hardware is more like the autopilot 2.5 hardware. However, since it will use lidar maps, it's likely more stable. Most manufacturers will use the same method for hands free driving on common highways. GM, then Ford, Nissan. Toyota and Mercedes are supposed to offer similar too, within a year.

If it is using the same eyeq4 chip why are they saying it will take until fall 2021 to get hands free driving?

I'd guess mapping and testing. We have a lot more road miles than Japan.

The convolutional neural network will need to unlearn the rules of Japanese right-hand driving and adapt to our anti-colonial left-handed ways. This can take some time. Millions of miles expertly driven by humans in the left leaning countries will constantly be flowing back to Ford and Mobileye's cloud-AI supercomputers. This means that probably by February 2021, or April 2021 at the latest, we should expect critically sourced reporting from highly credible publishers (like Electrek and InsideEVs), touting the 50x crash-mitigation safety of a Mustang Mach-E versus all other vehicles currently on our roads. So after thinking this through, it seems to me like Fall 2021 might be pessimistic.

From the Tesla owners forum. Tesla and the California Department of Transpotation exchanged emails this spring on level 3 reviews.
