Ford is switching over to using the android os for 2023 and gave no definite answer it that any existing sync 4 Mach-e would be upgraded to that change, so I wouldn't hold your breath that the sync 4 based system would be where the focus on any software improvements will be taking place.
It seems unlikely that Ford would stop all work on Sync 4a because they are transitioning to Android. It wouldn't surprise me if our cars don't get upgraded to Android, but I don't think we are using the final version of 4a.

I don't interpret the slower than expected roll out of OTA updates to be an indication that they aren't coming at all.
No, but we can't expect this one person to all of a sudden fix everything that is holding Ford back, not immediately anyways, and we certainly can't assume the MME will be his primary focus. We're looking at a new hire that is greatly needed at Ford but before I jump for joy, I'd like to see a little more reassurance from Ford and hopefully Mr.Fields in a few weeks will be able to provide some clarity on his mandate.

It all depends on what their timeline is. Obviously they haven't produced as many MME's as they'd like and I am hoping that entices Ford to either rethink their timeline or maybe even force them to update our cars if needed but right now we don't know what their plans are especially with this chip shortage and delays in updates hopefully their android timeline will take us into consideration.

In circles where Agile Scum is common terminology, there is another term that regularly comes along with it:

AGILE SCUM MASTER:

(noun) The person appointed the [impossible?] task of eliminating the impediments introduced by Agile Scum.

I suspect sync 4 systems will still get updates but once the android switch happens it will become an orphaned system so any cool features may need to be implemented twice fro both system which is debatable if that would happen.

From a hardware perspective the mach-e could no doubt be updated to run the new system, covid will probably have messed with timelines of which vehicles will be first to receive the new android based systems but with for the mach-e I would imagine it will end up being timed to happen with the mid cycle model refresh so in around 3 years time.

Ultimately it may then depend on the way the interior design goes, do they double down on touch everything or do as other manufactures have starting doing and returning to having physical dials and buttons for the hvac controls so the android setup may not be a simple software update due to design choices.

I suppose they could announce like Musk that the feature is being installed right now/already in the car and $5,000 will get you serviced, again and again. . .

Since Mr. Fields is an former Apple employee I hope they don't start favoring Apple support over Android like they seem to be heading. I didn't buy an Apple Car. I bought a Ford!

Thanks for the info Patrick!

But did anyone notice there is an Apple Watch Ford App, and not a Android Smart Watch app? Hmm

That's more about the state of Android Wear than anything about Ford. Google knows that Android Wear has fallen behind and has some major updates planned. Strava has even stopped supporting Android Wear 2.0 and is waiting for 3.0. And the finally released YouTube Music Wear app is only available on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4.

Note: FordPass does integrate with the Google Assistant. So if you have a Wear watch (or Android phone), you can use the Google Assistant to lock, unlock, check the charge status, etc.

He probably left Apple because they knew he couldn't get it done.

I sure hope so, but I don't think there would be an real realized gains for at least 2 years. Need time to build a development plan, test and deploy
2 Years?? Why would we think they would not develop and deploy using Agile methodology?

That's one of the fallacies of Agile. Outside of simple stuff that just presents information, new development still requires time to create an architecture and all the necessary plumbing. The most Agile will do is create a more iterative process of doing so. It won't get anything usable for the general public any faster. It cold actually make it take longer depending on which methodologies they adopt.

Down the road, it could mean smaller and faster releases of new infotainment features/tweaks. I don't see it quickening the process of core car modules where they still need to be weary about regulations, safety and liability.
