Last Sunday while my car was plugged and charging, I started it (to fiddle with settings). Ten minutes into it I got POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION / REDUCED POWER error. I turned the car off and didn't do anything Monday and Tuesday. Then, on Wednesday when I started it, I saw SERVICE VEHICLE SOON error. After a short trip and a 20 minute stop the error was not there. Several hours later, I went for another drive and the error was back. It was gone on the return trip. I scheduled an appointment at Camelback Ford for Friday and the error came and went several times over the next 3 days.

I showed up at Camelback on time for my appointment. The service guys wasted 2 hours of my time and then said they can't even look at it until next Thursday or Friday. I asked if I could re-schedule for when a tech could put it on computer and look at it. The service adviser said that the appointments are only for intake, and they would need to keep it for 3 days before looking at it. Also no loaners. I said that this wouldn't work for me. Took the car and left.

Once I got home, I started calling other dealers. First up, Autonation. They didn't have a service adviser available. Took my name and number. Didn't return my call for 3 hours, by which time I didn't need them anymore.

Next, Bell Ford. They followed the Camelback model: We're not happy till you're happy. They wanted to marinate my car for 2 day. Also, no loaners.

Next, Chapman Ford. The guy I spoke to said that he can't guaranty same day service (understandable), but if I brought on Saturday morning, they would perform some basic diagnostics and if not parts are required, they would get it done. I was there right before 7. At 7 my service adviser (Candice) walked out and greeted me by name. She listened wrote stuff down, and called over the Tech (Ian). He asked a few additional question and then took my car away. He came over 30 minutes later and said he needed to apply a few software updates, and one update wouldn't be ready till June. For the rest of the stuff, he needed an hour. Almost exactly an hour later, he came out again and said my car was done, and they will contact me when the other update is ready.

Needless to say, next time I need service, I'm headed to Chapman, and Warren Buffett and all of his companies can just suck it. Same goes for my next Ford purchase. Incidentally the following is what the did:

FYI, I created a long thread on two of your issues (service soon and red ring) I was the first to bring it to Ford Engineering.

Searching the forum could have saved you many hours dealing with the dealer.

Oh well, it’s a interference issue at your location. It turned out to be Ethernet over power line modules in my home. Once removed the problem went away, more details in the thread I created.

They are working on it, no fix yet.

What is the alarm doing?
The alarm does what alarms do. It goes off. Turning it off in settings does not work, and next time I start the car, the settings have it on. And its too sensitive. While waiting to have tech look at it, someone walked by it about 3' away and it went off.

You're comfortable allowing the masses closer than 3 feet from your MME?!? ??

My 1st reaction when I read this: This is some kind of bullshit!. My 2nd reaction: What have I got to lose. So I removed powerline ethernet setup ( i originally set it up 14 years ago for a blu-ray player that didn't have Wi-Fi, and it's no longer needed). When I did not get Service Vehicle Soon, my 3rd reaction was WTF. But if this solves it for good, I'm happy. I'll have to call Chapman and cancel my appointment.

Thank you.

Not the craziest thing I've heard. Around 10 years ago, certain fluorescent lights in garages were wreaking havoc with Cadillac keyless ignition. Cars wouldn't start in customer's garages but were fine everywhere else. That one took GM a while to figure out.

Interesting you would think I typed that long thread for fun. I worked for two weeks directly with Ford Engineering after my MME was in the shop for two weeks (DCFC module replaced, software updates). Returned home and the same issues, after much back and forth with Ford the FE's thought it was a wireless saturation issue in my home (too much WIFI). So I offered to figure this out for them, I started to eliminate everything in my home, low and behold it's the Ethernet Powerline adapter causing all the issues.

Short Technical Answer is - The Ethernet Powerline adapter uses the same frequency range as the MME in one of the chips (DCFC maybe), they are going to rework it so that the MME ignores it etc.

It's going to solve it for good, it did for me.

Welcome :)

Please don't take this personally. I'm a natural skeptic. And on the internet there really are lots of people posting all kinds of crazy, without any evidence. I do appreciate you tilting the balance in the other direction.

My primary reason for starting this thread is to share my experience dealing with different dealers' service departments in Phoenix area. I didn't think I had a serious problem and fully expected that it would be solved eventually.
