DEARBORN, Mich., and WOLFSBURG, Germany – June 10, 2020 – Ford Motor Company and Volkswagen AG today signed agreements that expand their global alliance to meet rapidly evolving needs of their respective customers in Europe and other regions by leveraging complementary strengths in midsize pickup trucks and commercial and electric vehicles.

Plans for the agreements were first announced by Ford and Volkswagen last July.

The companies expect the alliance to enhance ownership experiences for current and future customers by more rapidly innovating vehicle offerings, incorporating relevant new technologies, delivering better utility and offering more model choices. They anticipate continued growth in global industry demand for commercial vehicles and for high-performing electric vehicles to add valuable scale to their individual product portfolios.
The alliance will:
  • Produce a medium pickup truck engineered and built by Ford, for sale by Volkswagen as the Amarok starting in 2022 within the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles lineup
  • Further strengthen the commercial-vehicles businesses of both companies as early as 2021 – with a city delivery van based on the latest Caddy model, developed and built by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and later a 1-ton cargo van created by Ford, and
  • Lead to a highly differentiated Ford electric vehicle for Europe by 2023 built on Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive, or MEB, toolkit, expanding on Ford’s zero-emission capabilities in the region
During the lifecycles of the products, the companies expect to produce up to a combined 8 million of the medium pickup truck and both commercial vans included in the commercial relationships.

Ford and Volkswagen both have strong commercial van and pickup businesses around the world, including popular models such as Ford’s Transit and Ranger and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle’s Transporter, Crafter, Caddy and Amarok.

“Commercial vehicles are fundamental to Ford today and an area where we will accelerate and grow, and working with Volkswagen on these platforms will provide both of us significant financial advantages in things like engineering, and plants and tooling,” said Jim Farley, Ford chief operating officer. “Separately, Ford will add battery electric versions of Transit and F-150 in the next 24 months for commercial customers who increasingly need zero emissions and the power of connectivity, data and artificial intelligence.”

Ford’s use of Volkswagen’s MEB architecture in Europe will represent another cornerstone in Volkswagen’s electric vehicle strategy, and further efforts by both companies to fulfill their commitments to the Paris 2015 Agreement. Volkswagen and Ford plan to explore additional ways to cooperate on electric vehicles.
Over several years starting in 2023, Ford could deliver 600,000 electric vehicles atop the MEB architecture, which is designed to combine space and performance with electric drive. The vehicle, which will be designed and engineered by Ford in Cologne-Merkenich, will add another compelling nameplate to its own all-electric Mustang Mach-E, which will be introduced in 2021.

Additionally, the companies will both work with Argo AI to form distinct, highly capable autonomous-vehicle businesses based on Argo AI’s self-driving technology. Last week, Volkswagen closed its previously announced investment in Argo AI, the Pittsburgh-based company in which Ford already had ownership and development interests.

Volkswagen and Ford independently choosing to invest in Argo AI illustrates the technical leadership and progress of Argo AI’s self-driving system, and how alliances can help enable development of breakthrough technologies that require substantial time and resources. Argo AI’s SDS is the first with commercial deployment plans for both Europe and the U.S. The global reach of Ford and Volkswagen will give Argo AI’s platform the largest geographic deployment potential of any autonomous driving technology to date. Reach and scale are important factors in developing an SDS that is robust and cost efficient.
The Volkswagen/Ford alliance does not include cross-ownership between the companies, which will remain competitors in the marketplace.

The way that was written it sounded almost like they were going to add another model to the Mustang nameplate.

Maybe. It might also be saying that Ford has entered the electric field with the Mustang Mach E and will soon add another compelling BEV nameplate.

This reads like a release that was first written in German or was written by a German marketing team.

Ford closes deal to use VW tech for ‘differentiated’ European EV, maybe two

Following preliminary agreements from last year, Ford and Volkswagen this week signed a far-reaching agreement to co-develop electric and self-driving vehicles. The alliance is seen as a way to share costs with new technologies and to take on competitors such as Tesla and General Motors.

Ford said its VW-based EV will be “highly differentiated” from Volkswagen’s line-up of electric cars. Ford’s EV will be designed and engineered at the automaker’s European R&D center near Cologne, Germany.

Stuart Rowley, Ford of Europe President, told Automotive News:

We are very focused on the fact that these products will be Fords. They will look like a Ford, drive like a Ford, feel like a Ford and will be built by Ford.
Rowley said that Ford was also considering adding a second EV for Europe built on MEB.

Ford’s announcement that it would use Volkswagen’s technology to build an electric vehicle goes back to early 2019. The new model is expected by 2023. The Ford press release from a year ago pegged volume of its new European EV at 600,000 units over six years. (Media outlets this week apparently misreported that the venture would produce 600,000-plus cars annually, rather than over multiple years).

Ford’s EVs will be distinct but use VW’s underpinnings.

In a similar vein to the Ford-VW tie-up, General Motors and Honda formed an alliance to make electric cars and self-driving vehicles. Separately, Ford made a $500 million investment last year in Rivian.


Ford’s use of Volkswagen’s MEB system will help it sell EVs in Europe, but not the United States. The company will introduce the Mustang Mach-E crossover SUV this year. However, the electric version of its ultra-popular F-150 pickup will not arrive until mid-2022.

All automakers need to increase their share of EVs in Europe, where CO2 emission rules are stringent. Ford is expected to introduce electric versions of its Transit delivery van and the F-150 in about two years. It’s uncertain how the electric F-150’s fluid timing will affect those plans.

Automotive News explained part of the rationale:

Ford’s lack of an affordable electric vehicle will limit its appeal to fleet drivers, who are able to claim additional tax incentives for choosing an EV in key markets such as the UK.
Completely Separate Self-Driving Vehicles
Regarding autonomous vehicles, Ford and Volkswagen together plan to invest more than $4 billion through 2023 in Argo AI. The two companies, which have an equal stake in Argo, will independently develop vehicles using Argo’s technology.

Alex Hitzinger, the former chief executive of VW Autonomy, in January told Electrek that Volkswagen’s all-electric van will be the first platform for autonomy. “The ID Buzz will be our first L4-capable vehicle,” Hitzinger said. The I.D. Buzz passenger van is expected in US dealerships in 2022, with a cargo version to follow.

In late May, Hitzinger left his role at VW Autonomy to lead Audi’s new “Artemis” team, which is charged with developing a new “efficient electric car” by 2024.

A Ford spokesperson told us this week that it had not yet announced the vehicle it will use for an autonomous-vehicle service. Ford promised that news about its AV would be announced soon.

While Argo develops the self-driving system – not the vehicle – Bryan Salesky, Argo’s chief executive, suggested that a hybrid rather than a pure EV would enable higher utilization in a self-driving taxi service.

Ford’s self-driving vehicle is expected to come to the market sooner than what VW provides. The use of a hybrid by Ford for an AV would be for its initial product, after which the company’s future autonomous vehicles would be purely electric.

The broader agreement between Ford and Volkswagen also included developing midsize pickups and commercial vans, with the target of selling up to 8 million units. A Volkswagen-badged medium pickup will be built by Ford using its Ranger platform, according to Automotive News.

The VW pickup will likely be the Volkswagen Amarok – to go on sale in Europe in about 2022. The new Amarok will not be a pure EV but might be offered with a plug-in hybrid option.

This reads like a release that was first written in German or was written by a German marketing team.
Probably so, since it looks like the whole deal is mainly for vehicles to sell in Europe rather than North America.

What is likely of more interest to CleanTechnicareaders is the part about a “highly differentiated” electric vehicle with a Ford badge on it for the European market. What in the world does that bit of corporate doublespeak even mean? We actually have no clue, other than a statement by Volkswagen that ultimately there could be 600,000 of the MEB-based vehicles manufactured.

Early this year, there was considerable speculation that the MEB-based product from Ford would be a smaller version of the Mustang Mach-E — sort of a Mini Mach, if you will. That rumor was quickly tamped down by Ford, but it does make a lot of sense. SUVs are the hottest segment of the used car market, and the Mach-E may be a midsize car in America but it is a large car by European standards.
