Nope, all cellular.

Other updates are done at dealer via FDRS (ABS, steering, ect...)
I believe they wall off certain updates so that rogue actors can't break important things. Just the media and communications.

Yes, that’s always been there, and it’s required if you want your app to open your doors. Sort of like how you have to grant an app permission to use your camera before you can take a picture.

speed and location data are one concern....especially with speed limit sign recognition. If that data tied to my VINm name, location, and address is sold to Insurance companies, or law enforcement, who knows.....

second it the forced OTA without your permission. The revised TOS overide your settings, introducing side-effects, changes in settings and interface, or even changing the driving characteristics of your car (like changing max power output, limiting speed, or who knows what).

third it enables remote FP functions... like locking, unlocking, etc. what is something when WRONG and the Corporate Server got hacked and everybodies car locked and cancelled door pillar and backup codes ? or pooped open you frunk while you are moving? THAT would be randsomware!

Anything that can be a good feature that runs by software can be broken and mis-used or hacked and held for ransom. Anything that captures data can be hacked and data can be sold or mis-used.

.... if a nefarious group gains access to your vehicle's exact location, and cna unlock doors, and start remotely.... just imagine.
whether you agree to the EULA or not, does not influence any nefarious actors. Ford has faults but they are not nefarious.

There's some strange operation / security options like if a bluetooth device is to be accessed, location data must be given as bluetooth can be used for location purposes. It sucks that certain things are lumped together like that. Giving access to bluetooth shouldn't require FULL location data which can include GPS as well.

The car has a cellular modem built in - which is one way you get the live traffic updates while you're driving....

I'd assume Ford is using AT&T for backhaul, since that's who you need to contract with to get a WiFi hot-spot provided thru the Mach-E.

ATT -- the car doesn't pass data on your phone. When using carplay or android auto, that's basically your phone displaying stuff on the screen like a video feed of sorts. The vehicle's TCU (ATT 4G modem) is always on unless your vehicle enters low power mode, then it sleeps sync and shuts off the modem.

I don't have time to dig thru specifics today or near term.... for now I have:
- not accepted
- will put a new battery in my one Fob, and try to get a second from Dealer
- turned off auto-updates
- turned off wi-fi
for completeness you may want to pull the fuse on the cellular modem in the car... that's how all the good stuff comes and goes from the car.

for completeness you may want to pull the fuse on the cellular modem in the car... that's how all the good stuff comes and goes from the car.
unplugging the antenna should be sufficient. If it goes missing the car may throw a code. But having no cell signal isn't a big deal.
