So, why does the gear shift know rotate to the left beyond Park? It just kinda keeps rotating, where it stops, nobody knows!

You are correct! Not sure why they didn't make "stop" points for it. The shifter dial in my Expedition stops at Park and Drive.

It also spins clockwise beyond D.

I don't know why but it does make it it easy to find D and P

I've read that was a design choice. The rotating switch for the headlights functions the same way.

If you spin it really fast, it generates power back into the battery. Go out and try it. If you don't see anything happen, just try to spin it faster

It probably reduces breakage, too.

I really like the gear selector in the bronco. It had stops at park and drive. and if you turned the car off when it isn't in park it automatically turned the physical dial to park.

That's my thinking....if it had stops, some gorilla would twist hard enough to break them and complain thusly.
No harm can come from the way it works currently.
I don't like it or dislike it, it just "is." I've grown so used to just spinning it all the way left or right with abandon that if I got into a car where it did actually try to stop me, chances are I'd be holding the loose dial itself up my face in confused horror.

This is one of those posts that comes up as a brand new discovery over and over. It's the post that continues rotating. ?

The 'gear' selector does lock in park, unless the vehicle is on and ready and the foot is on the brake pedal.

Park and Drive are the two most frequent settings by far. So I’ve gotten used to giving the dial a quick flip to either direction to get to wear I need to go. Does not bother me a bit that the dial doesn’t stop at either end. One more thing to break.
