Getting to know the Ford Mustang Mach-E: first impressions of Ford's electric SUV

We went in Madrid to the presentation of the new Ford Mustang Mach-E, Ford's first electric SUV, which we got on for the first time. A car that comes with versions of up to 610 km of autonomy and a price from 48,500 euros.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E

Ford met us at the Hipódromo de la Zarzuela, west of the Madrid capital, although this time we weren't going to see purebred Spanish horses run. In reality, the event revolved around a horse of the 'mustang' breed, one that has been adorning the grille of some sports Ford since the 60s and that, now in 2020, looks and gives its name to the first electric SUV produced in series by the American company - the new Ford Mustang Mach-E .

As has happened with so many other models this year, the coronavirus had delayed the moment to meet the new Ford Mustang Mach-E, a car that has finally set foot in our country and that we have already been able to meet and even get into it.

The Mustang Mach-E takes (partially) the name of the 'pony car' par excellence, one of the most iconic Ford and icon of motorsport since the 60s. The American firm has transferred the name 'Mustang' to its first electric car of production, and also a few references to the original sports car in terms of design, such as the taillights with three vertical stripes; the trapezoidal front grille accompanied by very ragged headlights; or the fall of the ceiling in the 'fastback' style.

The design is always something quite subjective, although I will dare to launch my personal opinion: the Mustang Mach-E seems a very attractive car visually. It has sporty features (although it is not a sports car as such), a muscular line without falling into excess, well-resolved proportions and a lot of presence when you have it in front of you.

The absence of conventional handles to open the doors is striking; instead we have a button and a small handle on the B-pillar to pull the door , a system that Ford calls 'Phone as a key' since we only need to carry the phone with us. And if our phone runs out of battery, the door has a numeric keypad to enter a PIN and open the car. A technological deployment that could have had the clasp with rear view mirrors through cameras, resulting in a very clean body, but Ford has preferred to keep the traditional mirrors.

The Mustang Mach-E is a relatively large car: its body measures 4.71 meters long by 1.81 meters wide and 1.59 meters high . The roof arch can be misleading, as its design with a steep drop gives the impression of being lower than it actually is (there is some good design work here, as Ford aims to make it sportier).

However, if we look at the highest part of the roof, we see that it actually has flatter shapes and this allows for plenty of headroom for the rear row passengers.

If we go inside, my first impressions are that we are looking at a spacious car, very spacious , in which presumably 3 people can comfortably travel in a fairly wide rear row. A feeling of spaciousness that is also transferred to the front, with plenty of width between both driver and passenger; We are in an American car, here they will not bump their shoulders. In the central console there is room to leave the mobile (wireless charger included) and several other packages, two cup holders and the rotary selector for changing gears.

Inside, what stands out the most, without a doubt, is the huge 15.5-inch screen oriented vertically from which practically all the car's systems can be operated. A curious detail is the physical rotary knob at the bottom of the screen, which will allow you to control some functions.

In the infotainment and connectivity section we have the latest generation of the SYNC system , natural language recognition, Artificial Intelligence to learn driver preferences, wireless compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and remote software updates (OTA). Behind the wheel there is a second screen, 10.2 inches, which acts as an instrument panel and displays the most important information about driving.

Once in the Mustang Mach-E, the first impressions regarding the quality of the finishes were quite good. The settings convey a feeling of robustness and the materials chosen are pleasant to the touch and the eye. However, to draw solid conclusions we will wait until we can test a 100% production unit.

This time we were unable to drive the car, although we did have a brief touchdown from the passenger seat in which we were able to have a snack on the acceleration, braking and cornering agility of the Mustang Mach-E. Obviously we can't talk about the driving feel, the response or the reactions of the car, but the dynamic handling making things difficult seemed quite good.

Three power levels, two battery sizes and up to 610 km of autonomy

If we talk about batteries and mechanical configurations, the Mustang Mach-E will be available with two sizes of battery, rear or integral wheel drive and three power levels with versions of 269, 294 and 351 horses. At the end of 2021 the GT version will arrive, with 487 horsepower and 500 km of autonomy.

The 'Standard autonomy' versions have a 75.7 kWh battery capacity; in the extended autonomy versions the battery reaches 98.9 kWh. The cells are manufactured by LG Chem and, as usual in a car of this profile, the batteries are liquid-cooled. The Ford Mustang Mach-E supports fast charging with a maximum power of 150 kW in direct current. This means achieving up to 119 km of autonomy, depending on the version, with only 10 minutes of charge.

Regardless of the type of battery chosen, you can choose rear or total wheel drive, although each combination offers a different range. The access version has rear wheel drive, 440 km of autonomy and an engine with 269 HP of power and 430 Nm of torque. The version with standard battery and all-wheel drive has 400 km of autonomy and two electric motors, one on each axle, that deliver 269 hp and 580 Nm of torque.


The huge center screen is 15.5 inches.

The versions with the higher capacity battery offer up to 610 kilometers of WLTP autonomy (in case of choosing rear wheel drive), with 294 hp of maximum power. The version with the large battery and AWD traction certifies 540 km of autonomy and has 351 hp of power.

There are three driving modes: Active (the most balanced); Whisper (whisper); and Unbridled (unbridled / unleashed, the sportiest). We do not yet know the details of which systems or parameters exactly each of them affect, although presumably the main differences will be in the response and power delivery of the engine, the level of energy recovery and probably the response of the power steering.


The front boot has 100 liters of capacity. With the spacer, 81 are useful.

Ford Mustang Mach-E prices in Spain

The range remains fairly streamlined: as we've mentioned before, there will be four versions in total , with two options for the battery and rear-wheel or all-wheel drive versions. The equipment level is quite closed, as there will only be two optional packages. The rear-wheel drive versions have 18-inch wheels and the all-wheel drive versions, 19. Each has a different design and there are no other options. There are 7 colors available for the body paint.

Later will come the Mustang Mach-E GT , the most sporty and performance version, with 487 hp of power and 860 Nm of torque that will allow you to do the 0 to 100 km / h in just 3.7 seconds. During the presentation, Ford also took a pre-series unit of the Mustang Mach-E GT in a beautiful blue 'Grabber Blue', 20-inch multi-spoke wheels and Brembo brake calipers painted in red. A sight to behold.

The first deliveries to customers in our country will take place in the spring of next year , as confirmed by Ford. However, the brand will accept orders from a few months before, with prices shown below:
  • Mustang Mach-E RWD - standard autonomy (269 hp): 48,500 euros
  • Mustang Mach-E RWD - extended range (294 hp): 56,300 euros
  • Mustang Mach-E AWD - standard autonomy (269 hp): 55,800 euros
  • Mustang Mach-E AWD - extended range (351 hp): 64,500 euros
A very interesting point of the Mustang Mach-E is that the access version is eligible for Plan Moves II aid for the purchase of an electric car, so that it can stay at 43,000 euros if the conditions are met. A very attractive price considering the size of the car, its technology and safety equipment, and its autonomy.
