I agree with this assessment:

9to5Mac’s Take
This is an incredibly lame and sucky decision for a number of different reasons. GM is essentially dropping CarPlay because it wants to find new ways to charge customers a recurring subscription and new ways to collect data on driving habits. It’s a bad decision that I think the company will ultimately regret.”

Apple says 98 percent of all new cars already have CarPlay, and 79 percent of users consider the feature before buying a car.
Foolish. GM is off my list as well.

I guess we should have expected this since they weren't included in the announcement.

Apple says the first vehicles with support for the next-generation CarPlay experience will be announced in late 2023, with committed automakers including Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Volvo, and others.

My 2018 Camry had no carplay at the release and flooded with all bad reviews.

Likely a specific trim level. My sister loves her car (a different make), but it was made the year before that model got CarPlay (wasn’t an option on any trim). It’s the one thing she’d like changed.

Me? I’ve had enough. I’m never buying a car without CarPlay again. You bet it was a factor in buying a Mach E.

It's very nice just having your phone mirrored on the display. No fussing with another system to make calls, it's just there.

Yeah this is going to hurt them big. Apple touted that over 70% of new car purchasers look for a vehicle with CarPlay as a feature. They just lost all those possible customers.

Privacy is becoming a major concern for people so a company they just openly stated they want MORE customer data is going to lose that fight. Silly and very short sighted move by GM. Lets see how long it takes them to reverse course and catch up to everyone else.

No. My Top XLE Hybrid have no carplay and all 18' Camry had none. Before fall' 18, Camry received "One Star" rating instead of 5-stars normally. Toyota updated the firmware to have Carplay supported. We will see the 1-star rating of GM.

Is Barra touched? I'm an Android user and even I think this is a completely boneheaded move. Of the 17 people in my office exactly three of us have Galaxy devices. The rest all have iPhones. Do the ratio math.

Come on Ford and bring that cool-ass Euro Explorer EV to the states and eat GM's Equinox sales.

For me it is about the music. I cast Spotify from my phone to my Sonos speakers but when I get into my MME, the music just moves from the house speakers to the car without me touching a thing. I'm sorry but that is pretty dern cool and not something I take for granted.
