Tried EVgo for the first time yesterday and I'm not impressed. After our weekend road trip we haven't gotten back to 80% yet since we only have L1 charger at home. We visited Barton Creek Mall in Austin were EVgo has a 50kW charger I thought I would give a try. We have an account and a card so I figured it would be easy.
The 50kW wasn't working and we had to use the L2 7.2 kW and it only charged at 1ish kW  Big let down

I’ve been wondering how well these “125kW” CPE250 stations work for road tripping. I’ve gotten up to 57kW on the 62.5kW stations which was fine for a convenience charging opportunity but frustrating for a road trip.
Yeah, if we actually got the full 125 kW they'd be great because that's the effective max for the Mach-E anyway (except for those first 2 minutes of the charge where we peak at maybe 160).

Apparently the charger is really capped by amperage. A 50kw charger really delivers 125 amps at the standard 400V. But the MME really only operates at around 350V. 350V * 125A = 43.75kW, so that's the effective max on such a charger. Our max is about 12% below the advertised charger max.

Actually the 250's (capable of 125) should still get something like 110kw in the MME, which isn't bad. I've never used one to confirm it though.

It was probably one of the incompatible ones, those are usually the 50kw short and fat stations, apparently hasn't been updated yet?

In the app it had a name Mickey and it was a combo with J1772, Tesla and CHAdeMO.
It wasn't super tall but not very wide either. I know people have posted pictures here showing incompatible ones just not sure if it was on those.
The screen was black and no response so I didn't even get to try it.

Oh sorry, it read like you weren’t able to get it to charge on your car but it was on

This will be interesting to see how this plays out. I think this a match that EV owners have been looking for. EA Charges have been great for the most part, but have suspect locations (back of a Walmart parking lot we no amenities). Looks like EVgo charges are suspect but will have decent locations with amenities. The whole 50KW DCFC debacle would be resolve with a decent filter in the Mach E infotainment center. If it is less than 150kw I don't bother unless there is nothing else.

I have never heard of Pilot or Flying J on the east coast but I'm glad for expansion anywhere. Hopefully, this will boost EVGo as an organization.
You’re just too high-up on the East coast. :)

Here in Virginia, they run the entire length of Route 81 probably starting as high as Pennsylvania, maybe, but they’re both a common sight as you head south along the mountains. They definitely have a truck stop feel, but that particular stretch of road is very DCFC-light, so I’ll be happy to see if those stations along 81 get the retrofit.

50 kW is good for lunch or dinner stops. If you stop for dinner and connect to a 150 kW charger, the car is most likely going to be finished before you are done with dinner. Assuming a sit down dinner, not fast food, of course.

Because truck stops are exactly where I want to charge...

Actually, for F-150Ls, this MAY be ideal.
I think it's a great choice. 24 hour facilities access, food, bathrooms, good access to highways/freeways and well lit.

Pretty weak even for that. The Mach-E only charges at about 43kW on a 50kW charger. To do a 10-80% charge would take 83 minutes. That's a bit much, even for a casual sit-down meal (Chili's, Applebees, etc). Plus with the improved charge curve above 80%, it's sometimes advantageous to go up to around 90% (depending on what the next leg holds).

Not saying that a 50kw is worthless. It's a welcome sight if there's nothing good in the area. But it's very subpar for a routine roadtrip stop. Plus of course many times that isn't the right timing for the meal stop.

500 more charging stations? Along the highway? Beats charging in a hidden corner of a random Walmart parking lot…especially in the middle of the night. Sign me up!

Nice to have a non Walmart option.
Wifey knows every Walmart layout by heart along i-95 from FL all the way to NJ ... Pooler SC ...Walterboro SC ...Lumberton NC ...Emporia VA ...Richmond VA ...Stafford VA ... Washington DC ...Columbia MD ... Abingdon MD ... etc... etc... Walmart should give us the users of EA a frequent shopper discount credit card ....

I used to exclusively patronize Flying J on my road trips back to NJ because they had one of the cheapest high octane premium gas for my GLA, I liked their squeegee with extra long handle and full buckets of strong soapy waters plus clean toilets ...
