I've read the current rule of thumb by insurers is an EV that is in even a minor accident is suspect to have HV battery damage, which has farther reaching implications regarding safety and future additional repair, or total loss. Like most things electronic in this modern age, EV are disposable.
I predict a spike in insurance premium in the coming years.

That’s the impression I also get if not an official approach, and one of my roles is as an insurance assessor so I see it first hand.

That approach, largely, is a consequence of a lack of knowledge, qualification, experience and expertise.

What does everybody think they do with these cars when they become written off, evaporate them? Fire them into the sun?

They still do exist and become sold as repairable salvage because that’s how insurers reduce their financial loss

Then somebody prepared to do what insurers can’t be arsed or dissuade themselves from doing, and their Policyholders often pressurise and prevent them from doing is to repair the cars, check & test HV systems inc batteries and repair the often relatively minor body damage returning the cars to the road so achieving nothing which the mistaken justification used to write them of in the first place is said achieve.

So many are blinded by a notional mystique of EVs and aren’t qualified to deal with them.
I heard that Tesla will not allow Salvage cars to use their Superchargers. If true, this is a huge disadvantage to buying a salvage tiled Tesla.

Interesting!

Only thing is I see far more badly damaged cars repaired than some which are written off and salvaged so is a meaningless, misguided policy.

Not sure if such restrictive practices are legal and/or allowable in some markets.

I believe their reasoning is that they can't verify if the repair is done appropriately, and that if repair was not appropriate, it can cause a fire damaging both the car and the supercharger and possibly injuring people nearby.

Yep! I’m sure you’re right about what they reason.

I agree. Before stooping to the bolt, see if there are any premium AWD ERs around. You might get lucky since we are at a MY changeover.
That's a big stoop. Couldn't imagine going from Mach E to bolt.

So I drove a GTPE and had a blast. I’m not sure the sales person enjoyed it as much.

I’ll probably end up with a local Bolt that is currently getting a new battery. It’s $16k after rebate. It has 8k miles. Then I’ll order a Rally. Hopefully I will have it sorted by Friday. There is a GTPE coming to my dealer but I think they are going to ask too much.

If I bought a used MME I would most likely Not order the Rally.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a used Bolt; I've had a Bolt for four years, and still love it for around town, commuter-type use.

The rebate is the $4k used car rebate for EVs under $25k. Also Wa St has basically no sales tax (normally 10.2%) on cheap used EVs.

I also had 2020 Bolt that Chevy bought back and then gave us a 23 Bolt EUV.

Having a Bolt will keep me searching for the BBD.

The Bolt is a perfectly good and reliable daily driver. Not nearly the fun of a MME, but it gets the job done very well.

Yeah, if you’re not an enthusiast and just looking for basic EV transportation, the Bolt works. My wife is currently happy in her 2008 CR-V hauling groceries and grandkids. I told her I’m not buying any more tires for it, so I could see a Bolt in her future. ?

The rebate is the $4k used car rebate for EVs under $25k.
Thatā€˜s a tax credit, not a rebate. Make sure you qualify for it. You need to have enough tax liability but can’t make more than $75k a year ($150k if married filing jointly). It also needs to be at least 2 model years old and purchased from a dealer.

Personally, if I were in the market for a Bolt, I’d get a new one. They start around $20k after the $7500 tax credit, and it’s easier to qualify for that one.

I honestly would just replace it with a similar used MME! Try the GT! Why on earth would you downgrade your ride?

Well, Crap!

I said goodbye to My 1st Edition the other day. A high school kid did an illegal U-turn in front of me. LeeLou is dead! I just found out she's "totaled." Valued at $45k.

I drove home 2 miles after the incident and (other than the red hood in the way of seeing the road) I couldn't tell I had been in an accident. It drove perfectly.

My Replacement Choices Are Not Good: I don't see that Ford has made significant progress toward fixing the GT issues list in plenty on this site, and the Ralley Edition is too far away to wait. I need a car now. Five drivers and two cars, is not going to work.

I will probably just get a used Bolt while I figure it out.... unless I get a better idea/option.

Glad to hear you walked away from that accident. As far as replacement options, perhaps you want a car with a bit more visible color and (in)famous presence… and within your replacement price range? Bonus, you know the service history of the car!

Link

That’s right! Driveway.com has OG Mach N Cheese somehow sitting on a Ford dealer used car lot in Boise Idaho for only $44,995! It’s been sitting there a long time at this point, and they haven’t reduced their price on it. I know driveway paid me $2k more than this so someone’s definitely losing money here!
