Skipping this is a critical mistake new owners make. Even if you will never use PaaK, you need to set it up to create a door code and backup start code.
I can't set up a backup start code because my Paak won't connect. It goes halfway, give me that code to write down, and stalls out.

Is there a way to set up a backup start code without Paak?

Yup on both. Water does it all the time.

Of course you don't need to set a doorcode, you just need to write down the factory one. Setting a code adds a 2nd code, the factory code remains.
When you set up a door code itā€™s attached to your PaaK. The factory door code is not affected or changed.
You are both correct, I am surprised. Seems like a potential security issue.

Definitely then it seems like the code that an owner can set is like a ā€˜guestā€™ code and only that code should ever be shared if for some reason wanting to give a stranger access, since only that one can be purged.

Go into FordPass and delete the PaaK that is incomplete. Just to be safe, also reboot the phone in case itā€™s also a Bluetooth issue.

Then set it up again. It seems that there is no way complete an unfinished PaaK setup.

Actually, has nothing to do with PaaK. A personal doorcode is something Ford has had for decades. Don't need a FOB, or a phone, on your to use it.

You may set up to FIVE personal codes. If you want to setup a temporary one for someone, then delete it, it's easy.

@RickMachE - please explain how this is done rather then just being a contrarian. When I tried to setup a backup code for my wife from the console (today), it told me to do it from FordPass by setting up a PaaK.

Two different things.

A door code opens the door.

A backup code starts vehicle when neither a PaaK or FOB is available.

A backup code is useless if you cannot get in the vehicle with the door code.

A door code doesn't let you start the vehicle.

Up to 5 door codes can be created in addition to the original permanent code.

Backup codes are tied to PaaK only as far as creating them. One code per PaaK.

Once created, a backup code can be used by anyone. You only need to create multiple backup codes if you need unique ones. I created one, anyone can use it.

Given that backup codes are used in the absence of PaaK or FOB, saying they are tied to a profile is really irrelevant.

Hope that helps.

By the way, by setting up a PaaK is the easiest way to get to the door code setup and backup start code setup. Not everyone is as knowledgeable as you. Iā€™m certainly not but I get by. I do it in a way that works.

You do not need to use PaaK to setup door codes, but you do need to use PaaK to setup backup start codes.

Setting up a PaaK is not the easiest way to setup a door code. You can setup door codes from the door keypad in seconds.

From the manual:

Creating Personal Access Codes
To create your own personal access code:
1. Enter the factory-set code.
2. Press 1Ā·2 on the keypad within five seconds.
3. Enter your personal five-digit code.
4. Press 1Ā·2 on the keypad to save personal code one.
The doors lock then unlock to confirm that programming was successful.
To program additional personal access codes, repeat Steps 1-3, then for Step 4:
ā€¢ Press 3Ā·4 to save personal code two.
ā€¢ Press 5Ā·6 to save personal code three.
ā€¢ Press 7Ā·8 to save personal code four.
ā€¢ Press 9Ā·0 to save personal code five.
Hints:
ā€¢ Do not set a code that uses five of the same number.
ā€¢ Do not use five numbers in sequential order.
ā€¢ The factory-set code works even if you have set your own personal code.

Iā€™m glad you educated me. I didnā€™t know that door codes could be set up separately from setting up a PaaK. My 1st new Ford in 23 years. Anyway, OPā€™s problem was not knowing the door code.

My 1998 Explorer had the door keypad (big ugly thing too). Ford introduced it in 1980, 42 years ago.

Bought it used, didnā€™t know the code, never tried it or tried to set it up. Iā€™m just saying door codes are new to me.

Not a security issue any more than a key fob is.

Actually the key fob is more of a security issue.

With the fob they could change your PAAK, change FordPass access etc.

I donā€™t think they could do much with just your codes. Sure they could steal your car, then you just locate it with FordPass and get your car back.

When I wash my car at home, I leave my phone and fobs away from the car. My car does not lock when washing if it can't see a key.
