Unfortunate but true, been looking for a Xbox Series X or PS5 recently. They MSRP for $500 and both have been constantly sold out since they launched in the Fall.

They get relisted on Target, Bestbuy, Walmart, whatever, gone in literally two minutes and even then no guarantee your ‘Add to Cart’ goes through, often doesn’t. On the other hand, if I were willing to pay $700+, I could find one no problem on ebay right now.

Covid made the world crazy, people are still spending very little on services and experiences. All desirable material items are sold out or hard to find.
well, our microwave went out. About a month after the manufacturer warranty. We paid around 500 for it. But we always paid for the extended warranty. The part to fix it is only 80 dollars. But it's been on backorder for 6 months already. So they want to just give us our retail price back for it to buy another one. The problem is the same model is now 180 dollars more than we purchased it for. So wait forever for the part "if" it comes in or pay more for the same one. Supply and demand. Sucks ass

A lot of dealers are going to have cars coming off demo period (4k miles or 4 months, whichever comes first). If you don't mind a few miles on it, you can find one at or below MSRP. Not sure if it's true in all states, but generally they will be on dealer plates and not titled, so still eligible for the 7.5k credit. The demo mileage also does not count against warranty. Another way to skip the line, and you can quite likely take the car home for a day before buying.

It's a shitty business practice that increases consumer hatred for car dealerships.
I am curious how many of these dealers actually stick to their ADM guns. I saw one post on here where they cut it from $10k to $5k in pretty short order. The dealer that I test drove at dropped their $5k as soon as I said no way.
That was me :) Frankly, if they had added the $10k to the price on their site, it wouldn't have mattered to me since I would never have even contacted them about it in the first place. My anger stems from not being told the price on the site was fake until I was ready to lay some money down after wasting time going back and forth on it.. After I laughed at the manager for telling me that $10k number and hung up, the salesperson immediately called me back and offered it for $5k over. More laughter. I can't imagine wanting a car that bad to pay a $5k markup rather than wait, but to each their own.

I ordered a Tesla Y performance for $62k. I previously owned a Model 3 and was happy with it. I like the interior of the Mach E and the fact that it had a 100 year old company standing behind it. I'll keep looking for a Mach E at msrp. If I find one before the Y is available, I will buy it. So, we'll see.
Totally shocked that you owned a Tesla and then found several greedy Ford dealers to reinforce your decision to buy another Tesla...

Well unless the boat dealer business is different that the car or equipment business, they lied to your face. The longer a unit stays on the lot the higher the flooring costs to the dealer. Dealers need to get em in and out as quickly as possible.
The 'skip the line' concept is interesting. You can get one right away, as long as you want/are willing to accept what they have. I ordered because I wanted the exact car, not what was available.

I ordered from a dealer over an hour away from me because the one 15 minutes away from me has slimy business practices (I know because I previously bought a car from them). I did use the closer one for my first test drive though. ?

well, they are well known for many bad things they have done. So bad that ford had to pay them a visit and it was on the news.

My parents wanted to buy a Ford Taurus since there were such great rebates like 7,000 off back in 2018. We looked around and Oxmoor ford had one they liked. I called and they said yes they have it and 3 other ones. The next day the salesman called and asked if we would come in for a test drive. My father is 68 at this time and he is not a go back and forth kind of person. He goes in sees the car writes the check and done. He asked me you're sure it's there ready? yes, it is.

So I drive my parents to Oxmoor ford to get the car. We go in and a person asks can we help you. I tell them what car we are here for and the person's name. They asked us to have a seat and they will be right back. 5 minutes turned into 30 minutes waiting. Finally, he comes back and says sorry sir we loaned that car out to a repeat customer whose lincoln is getting worked on. A brand new Taurus the one we were told was here for us? So ok how about the other 3? We traded those to different dealers but the page has not updated that yet sorry.

Your salesman right there said they were on the lot and he saw them. That was it no more talk my father was pissed. We started walking to leave and the general manager came walking over and said clear as day and I won't forget it." hey hey calm down how do we fix this? How about some popcorn. My father said take that popcorn and stick up your ass.

We have a special person at the ford plant that deals with problems like this for a plan people. Yeah, I called her and she sent it to the top of the chain.

We drove all the way to don franklin ford and when we got there they had 4 Taurus waiting for us and the keys. no, haggle no problem great dealership.

So that is one of the many reasons people around here know Oxmoor ford is at the bottom of the barrel.

Aside from traditionally volatile things like fuel and food, we are not seeing rapid inflation. Consumer goods are under 3%. Directly on topic, the MSRP is not rising. Just some dealers trying to gouge customers.
Consider @ARK example of game consoles. People would lose their minds if Target/Wal-Mart etc jacked up their prices to take advantage of scarcity. The stores still sell at MSRP. The big mark up is in the secondary market.

Inflation has been below target for years. Whether or not this spike is temporary or will be long lasting depends on which analysts you go with. Of course this was all in the article you linked, but you conveniently left it out of your comment.
I've never purchased a high demand vehicle in its first model year before. The entire car buying process is a shitshow for the average consumer. I've always known this but I was insulated from it because I worked at dealers for so many years. It has improved somewhat with the proliferation of useful information on the internet. There are still too many secrets that the dealers keep to ever really know if you're paying a fair price though.
