Preface

I used Plug & Charge exclusively. I never had a P&C failure. I never had to wait for a charger. All stops other than the last one used my FordPass charging balance from the “chip hold” so my FordPass Charging Network balance is now 0KWh.

I had a little bit of range anxiety for the trip between leg 5 trip since ABRP wanted me to charge past 80%. Totally unfounded, as I always stopped with more than the estimated remaining SoC of 10%.

TL DR Version

Charging was a breeze. ABRP was awesome. Ford’s Nav hated one stop for some reason. IACC rocks for the most part. The plane of the steering wheel is pitched too far off of vertical in the steering column’s lowest position and causes my hands to go numb after a while. I am no longer dogless. 😎🐩

Northbound Trip

Leg 1 temps in mid-50s, IACC set to 76 mph, 2.3 mi/KWh. Stopped at the EA station in Dunnigan, CA (America’s Best Value Inn). Charged beyond 80% because we were eating. 43 KWh charge after 80%

Leg 2 temps in mid-50s, IACC set to 76 mph, 2.3 mi/KWh. Stopped at EA in Anderson, CA (Safeway). Bathroom breaks in conjunction with higher than originally-planned prior charge in Dunnigan led to charging past 80%. 42 KWh charge after 80%

Leg 3 temps in low-60s, IACC set to 76 mph, 1.9 mi/KWh. Mountainous travel. Stopped at EA in Yreka, CA (Walmart). Charged to app 53 (ABRP suggested 50%). Due to the Ford Nav system giving me some completely crazy directions, I messed up and got on the wrong I-5 on-ramp which led us to have to return to this station and put a few more watts into the battery pack.

Leg 4 temps in upper-40s, IACC set to 76 mph, 2.2 mi/KWh. Mountainous travel. Stopped at EA in Grants Pass, OR (Walmart). The first charger I parked next to was out of service, but the others were all working so I just moved to a working one. Charged beyond 80% due to a long leg planned by ABRP and its suggestion to charge to 82% (charged to 85%). 43 KWh charge after 80%

Leg 5 temps in mid-50s, IACC set to 76 mph, drizzle and occasional rain, 2.3 mi/KWh. Stopped at EA in Springfield, OR (Target). Charged past 80% because we went shopping in Target (ABRP suggested 67%). 43 KWh charge after 80%

Leg 6 temps in mid-50s, drizzle, IACC set to 76 mph, 2.3 mi/KWh. Stopped at EA in Vancouver, WA (Walmart). Charged past 80% because I wanted to be able to make it to the hotel, then to my dog’s breeder’s twice, then any additional travel. 43 KWh charge after 80%

The morning after Leg 6, I went to the grocery store about a mile away. I had a PaaK failure (No key detected) after returning from grocery store before going to my dog’s breeder’s house. Good thing I had my secondary key in my pocket wrapped in foil.

No incident after the PaaK failure in the trip to and from my dog’s breeder’s house, apx. 5 miles each way. Left breeder’s house with apx. 17 pounds more than when we stopped there. First night sleeping with dog in bed, woke up to dog's teeth buried in my left cheek. Note to self: Be awarre enough while sleeping with a dog who has never slept outside of a crate to not hug him while he's asleep. 🤪🐩

Southbound trip (return to home)

Leg 1 temps in low 50s-mid 40s, clear, then spots of rain as we traveled south. IACC set to 76 mph, 2.1 mi/KWh. Fan running with no A/C on. Stopped at EA in Albany, OR (Walmart). Ioniq 5 owner having problem with EA ABB 350 KW machine, only charging at 40-ish KW. He warned me that he was having trouble with the machine I was plugging into. After GT-PE plug & charge negotiated, initial charge rate of 143 KW. Turns out his hotel was only 1/4 mile away and his battery was just over outside air temp in the mid-40s. Time for dog potty break. GT-PE needed 50% charge to reach next stop (60% with 10% buffer), charged to 68% and took off at the same time the Ioniq 5 was leaving.

Leg 2 temps in mid 40s, overcast with spots of rain, leading to showers and more rain. IACC set to 76 mph, 2.1 mi/KWh. Fan running with no A/C on. Stopped at EA in Sutherlin, OR (Dairy Queen). Had lunch, potty break, dog potty break, and charged to 60% on a 53% estimate from ABRP.

Leg 3 temps in mid-40s to 38, rain with a few clear spots. IACC set to 76 mph, down to 60 when the temps got colder, 2.1 mi/KWh. Fan running with no A/C on. Stopped at EA in Grants Pass, OR (Walmart). Quick dog potty break (not needed, he didn’t go but he didn’t mind standing in the rain sniffing the air). Charged to 62% on an ABRP estimate of 54% due to temperature. Noticed a few snowflakes hit the windshield while charging. Uh-oh!

Leg 4 temps in the 30s, rain turned to snow turned to really heavy snow. IACC initially set to 65, then down to 60, then the front sensors froze up (car complained that they were obstructed about 15 minutes into this leg), so no more IACC. Drove the car myself for the remainder of this leg, varying speed pretty much downward the entire time (I was traveling 10-20 mph slower than the semis because I was afraid of destroying the GT-PE tires). Tire pressures stayed a couple of PSI higher than when we started, so I was pretty confident that they at least had some decent internal temperature built up. This was mountainous driving, mostly downhill. 2.1 mi/KWh. Fan running with no A/C on (the car at some time turned the e-heat on). Stopped at EA in Yreka, CA (Walmart). Quick dog potty break, more dog standing in the snow and sniffing the air. Tires looked OK. Charged to 68% on an ABRP estimate of 61% due to temperature.

Leg 5 temps in the mid-30s up to 47, snow gave way to rain with some clear spots. Front sensors still obstructed, even after pouring some warm water on them and wiping them dry. So, still no IACC. 1.9 mi/KWh, don’t know why as we were not traveling much above 40 for most of this leg and it was warmer than the last leg and part way into the run I discovered the E-heat was on and turned it off. Tire pressures remained pretty much what they were on the previous leg. Stopped at EA in Anderson, CA (Safeway). Potty breaks all around. Tires still looked fine even though I was using them well outside of their operating temperature. Fed and watered dog, dog potty break. Charged to 73% on an ABRP estimated 70% required to next stop (to arrive with 10% SoC).

Leg 6 temps from the high-40s into the low-50s (I believe 53 was the highest OAT I saw on the screen). Cloudy weather with a couple of light drizzly showers. IACC finally became available after the temperature was above 50, so IACC set to 76 after driving between 60 and 76 depending on traffic and road conditions. 2.2 mi/KWh. I was ignoring the tire pressures because the temperature came back into their operating window before we arrived in Anderson (previous stop). Stopped at EA in Dunnigan, CA (America’s Best Value Inn). Potty break and had dinner. Dog potty break (unnecessary). Charged to 82% on ABRP reccomendation of 70% due to eating time.

Leg 7 temps in the lower 50s. Cloudy but dry weather. IACC set to 76. 2.2 mi/KWh. Dropped sister off at her home then drove a couple of miles to my house. Potty break for dog in our front yard. 😎🐩

Glad to hear your road trip was so successful! We need a new big set of module updates in FDRS so you can bring him by to visit.

Makes me jealous while waiting for some charging infrastructure to be built in South Dakota to make a road trip possible. ;) Your kWh per mile is pretty close to what I see on the road.

Maybe when @markboris is out here in a couple of weeks I can convince him to go the 20 or so miles Amd we can all visit. 😊🐩

I generally get high 2s for mi/KWh, bu that includes warm Bay Area temps and Bay Area traffic. The low 2s seem to be representative for slightly higher than freeway speeds. 😊🐩

There are still a lot of places where there are fast charger deserts. Hopefully these will be plugged up and the number of chargers gets increased. We are only going to get more EVs on the road. 🤔🐩

Great detailed writeup Steve and glad all went well. The only long trip I've ever taken was last year when I drove my Premium one way to Arizona (Waddell) from my home (Sonora, CA). Never did post a write up on it but it was 687 miles and never had issues using P&C or the one EVgo station I went to. I believe I stopped 4 times to charge. It was about an 11 hour drive.

Maybe when @markboris is out here in a couple of weeks I can convince him to go the 20 or so miles Amd we can all visit. 😊🐩
I drive back and forth to Sacramento airport twice a month (237 mile round trip) and Bay Area once a month or so (262 mile round trip) to visit family so driving is not the problem, it's time that's the issue. I am booked out the next three months fairly heavy with trips and friends visiting. If you want to plan something, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Now that we are warming up into the 60's and 70's High 2's are happening to me, when I can keep the speed down.... :)
