Has anyone opened the Ford/Tesla NACS adapter yet?

I was just watching the @Mach-E VLOG video that was posted today. In it they confirmed how easy it would be to walk up to a random Mach E and steal the NACS adapter. Considering that they will probably be in short supply for a while while Tesla continues to on board all the other manufactures, I'm curious if there is room inside the adapter for an Apple Air Tag or a Tile.

To that end, has anyone opened one up? Can it be opened non-destructively and how much space is inside? Inquiring minds want to know!

If anyone has seen any threads of a tear-down, especially one with lots of pictures and/or video, please share!

It seems unlikely that theft will be a major concern, but who knows. There appears to be little intrinsic value to the adapters. How much of a second-hand market would there really be for it to be worthwhile to steal and re-sell? I can't believe there are too many people that can afford an EV that would be willing to potentially throw their lives away for a ~$200 adapter. 🤷‍♂️

I doubt there would be room to stick an air tag in there and even if there was, it would be an unsafe idea. The adapter is designed in a way to handle 1000V and 500A. You could reduce its ability to dissipate heat by putting a foreign object in there.

That is just not how thermal transfer works. There is no way adding such a small object to the inside of the adapter could have any appreciable impact on its heat dissipation capabilities. Even if it did, there are likely thermal fuses inside to make sure things do not over heat.

If there is room inside for an AirTag, I would take every precaution to make sure I did it in a safe manner. I'm just looking to see if it is even possible.

It’s too bad there is no locking mechanism as with TeslaTaps, though the size of lock it accommodates is pretty wimpy. But it’s something at least.

Do NOT stick an AirTag in there! If that somehow comes loose and shorts the two DC bars together, BOOM! You could destroy your battery pack or burn your car to the ground. Really dumb idea IMO.

Say somebody steals it and you track it, what are you going to do? Waste your battery chasing them? Police aren't going to care enough about a $200 theft to do anything. So in the end you're out the adapter anyway.

I've been robbed before. I've had my house burgled.

I still don't bother with most security other than super simple, out-of-sight, out-of-mind and basic locks on house doors, etc.

One of the wisest things I was taught when I was a pre-teen is, "No lock will stop a dedicated thief; a lock only helps keep honest people honest."

If someone wants to take this thing off my car, I'd rather they have a very, very easy way to do it. I don't care if they keep it or sell it or just remove it so they can use the charger. I don't care why they want the thing off my vehicle.

What I don't want is to saddle my vehicle (which is worth around $40k-$60k to replace) to a $20 lock or tracker on a $250 device.

If someone wants or needs it that badly, they can have it. I'll just buy another one.
It would be much easier and cheaper to do that than to get my car fixed/replaced.
Or worse, send myself to the hospital because I thought a $250 adapter was worth confronting someone who has already shown they aren't exactly a person who cares about positive social behaviors.

Dang, everyone here is trying to talk me out of doing something that I don't even know if I'm going to do yet.

Be assured everyone, I'm not an idiot and know my way around electricity. I'm not going to do anything that I feel will put myself, my car, or the fast charger at risk. I'm just looking to see if anyone has done a teardown on the NACS adapter yet so I can figure out if what I want to do is even possible.

Instead of a device inside the adaptor, is there a way to software a noise/alert/flashing lights when charging gets interrupted unexpectedly?

Well, I know that I will charge at Tesla SC unattended at my favorite gym & supermarket so I expect the adapter to get stolen.

So I ordered a 3rd party adapter as a back up.

And once Ford Parts has them in stock, I'll use my 100K points to pay for another....

No biggie - just the cost of doing EV business...

(In my case, the costs are tax deductible in my small business).

They will do an ota to fix the issue with the push unlock button and you remove the adapter or they won’t. If someone really wants the adapter to steal it, maybe they need it more than me 😂🤷🏻‍♂️. Or if you’re really stressing it until they fix the issue don’t walk away from your car when it’s charging with an adapter that doesn’t lock.😂

Or if you look at it the way I look at it being brand new. I’ve only charged at home on my 120 getting my level two installed this week. I haven’t used the free kilowatt hours yet cause I don’t travel a lot my adapters coming I got an email from Ford the other day that it’s been sent and if anybody steals it, well, we did buy a Ford and not a Tesla, so I look at it as I probably wouldn’t have had to use a Tesla charger in my life unless I was taking a long trip and that’s the only thing that was available other than that I’m sure if somebody did take it they probably sell it on eBay or something.

There are many discreet covers for AirTags that could be added to the AirTag that people would notice right away. I use these AirTag containers that work inside a backpacks they stick to fabric and plastic and wood and other things and they hold on really well and might be a deterrent for somebody thinking about stealing one that's always an option it doesn't look like there's any way to actually open up the but then again I wouldn't walk away from the car while it was charging it seems said it would leave it vulnerable to theft or other things sitting at the charging station.

Given these are being manufactured for Ford by Tesla, I wonder if they have put some sort of a LoJack feature in the electronics? Has anyone heard about this?

Did you think that when you posted an idea on a public forum you wouldn’t get opinions?

Just to pile on…….

What do you think the black market will be for a product everyone here is getting for FREE??

I would also love to hear what your plan is for step 2-

Step 1- track your stolen device

Step 2- ?????
