well according to the last email I received from Ford, there are some software updates that are scheduled to be carried out at the dealership when I take my car in for the windscreen recall and one of those updates "Resolution of error that inaccurately understates driving range' even so in your case that's a massive jump.

My guess would be that an update reset the GoM to default and they have it sitting in a nice warm garage.

Yes the engineer said even though the software had been updated when I took it in 14 days ago he was surprised to find another update
BUT when I left dealership GOM range 284 mileage 3351.84
When I arrived GOM 246 indicating I had done 38 miles actual mileage 3380.60 = 28 so I had lost 10 miles my mls/kw 3.4 Does this mean the update has Made the GOM optimistic and not conservative

More likely the update erased your driving history, so once you actually drove it, it started using new driving data for the GOM.

They really should just get rid of GOM. It just adds more confusion and unrealistic expectations than any actionable information. Make people rely on common sense instead of a fake magic number. This is across all EV's. My friend who works for Tesla says the majority of the service requests they get around winter time is people not understanding cold weather's effect on EV's and freaking out after their GOM goes low.

What would be the alternative?

I have experience with batteries in mobile catering units so know the deal but to me it is unfathomable with modern technology they can not do better with range indication. I have a 50 year old car that with a full tank I know within 5-10% how far I can go

Ah, but temperature affects the density altitude less than it affects the chemical activity of a battery and different battery technologies are affected differently from one technology to another (although this is a pretty minor factor). The GOM also takes into account your driving history. Even so, it’s generally wildly inaccurate and the number you have in your head based on your history might be more accurate. ?‍♂?

Don't have it at all, just show the state of charge like your phones or ICE vehicles' fuel gauge.
I mean, I think that's what a lot of EV drivers take into account now, I was just reading something and it said that EV drivers are less likely to run out of fuel compared to ICE drivers. It's because we're more conscious about our range.

That is funny I went into the dealership yesterday for the latest software uptade as the 1.7.1 got stuck. Afterwards my range went from 265 to 205 at 90%. AWD EXtended range. ANd this is california it has been in the forties . I don't really care as I get consistently 3 to 3.5 kwH when I drive. It is all a guess. Just enjoy the car.

I bet that has more to do with how most people with EV's have a L2 charging solution at home or at work and is always "topped off". Also EV driver's are less likely to wait till the last second to charge/fuel like ICE cars because ICE car drivers rely on the abundance of gas stations whereas we have to be a little more discerning.

What if they added things to it to show how they've come to that number like:
-30 - Outside Temp
-20 - Driving history
-10 - Cabin Temperature

If all the numbers add up to what the epa estimate is, would that make people a little more happy to know why it's so low?
