How does your CarPlay work with iMessages?

Pre-IOS 18 I was satisfied with CarPlay. Post IOS 18 things are different, but I'm not sure if the changes are the way things are supposed to work, or I need change some settings. Pre-IOS 18 when I got a iMessage I would get a yellow banner at the bottom of the screen with the phone # or name of the sender. I could then tap on it and Siri would read the message. (I am not sure if I had "announce messages" on or even if that was part of the settings pre-IOS 18.) Post IOS 18 I no longer get the yellow banner and the only way to get the message read is to turn on "announce message" and SIRI reads the message aloud. I would prefer the message not be read aloud automatically but want that yellow banner back so I can at least see who the message is from, etc.

If anyone is still getting the yellow banner as described above - what iMessage/notification settings do you have on or off to make this happen. Hope this makes some sense as it is driving me crazy.

Did you try turning off announce messages? I have it on because I like less screen interaction when I’m driving.

Hi, I have turned off announce messages, but yellow banner never shows when an iMessage comes in. I do hear a "beep" and the message app shows a pending iMessage. I then have to ask Siri to read my latest message - which she does.

Mine works the same as it did on iOS 17.
Banner appears showing who the message is from and then it reads the message.

or if announce is off, I get the banner and can tap to listen

It’s a gray notification banner, I’ve never seen it yellow with any version of iOS.

Do you have the Messages app set to only open with faceid?

I had problems early on because I had iMessages set up to require my Face ID on my phone, but I turned that off and everything seems to work fine now.

The annoying change mentioned in that link is that it no longer follows up with “Do you want to reply?”.

It's all a matter of the settings in your iPhone.

I have had the same issue. The only time I get a pop up is when I'm actually in carplay. I have announce turned off because i don't want to hear them all the time.

This thread didn't help at all. Now when I hear a chime that there is a message I have to ask siri to read them to me. They could be a message, a calendar appointment or any other type of message. Very annoying.

I know i had an issue when i changed phones and found there are settings on the phone, and settings in the carplay app in the car. I always had it set read messages, and wouldnt anymore. There is a setting in carplay in the car to use last settings, or something like that. But playing around with both phone and in car settings got it to work. I know iOS 18 doesn’t have banners anymore right> it shows a box in the middle now?

DO you want them to announce? to be honest i have no walk thru i kept playing with the settings in the car and phone till it worked. In the phone go to Notifications, scroll down to siri ”announce notifications” and click that. There you will see check box to turn it on, and also CarPlay settings to announce new messages.

I’m in the exact same boat as the OP. Since I got a new phone and iOS 18, I’m constantly frustrated with CarPlay. Like OP, I want it to show that there a message from someone on the screen and allow me to touch it if I want it read to me. I don’t want it to read every single message as they come in because that’s just annoying and the timing may not be when I want to hear it.
I have tried every setting I can find on the phone and on the car. Still no luck either. Now I need to hear my call phone in pocket chime to know there is a message, then navigate to CarPlay, messages, and play the latest message if I want it. I didn’t know I could tell Siri to play it, but since iOS 18, the voice commands only work half the time anyway. It’s like CarPlay only halfway connects.
