So I ran into Manhattan today to pick something up, and found some nice street parking on east 97th right by the traverse. It was a beautiful space with nobody in front of me, but I still didn't want to be there long. I grabbed my phone and my bag, touched the door lock heard honk, and went to pick up my item. 5 minutes later I'm back and noticed the indicator lights on. I open the door to be greeted with the car still on and "running." Now I'm not even sure if that honk was for the lock, or me walking away with the keys without shutting it off. Because it's electric I didn't hear the engine running. Thankfully it was still there when I came back, and I just learned a big lesson to double check that it shut off before I leave, especially when street parking.

Just telling my story so that no one else is an idiot like me.

in reality it doesn't matter. if you're not running the HVAC it's basically not even using power. i think it also turns off after [x] minutes on its own, x being user defined, default being 15 i think

the car does lock if you have "walk away lock" feature and you take your keys with you

that said having a flashy car with the screen and lights on in NYC and owner not in sight sounds a bad day waiting to happen :p

And even if the door did not lock for any reason, it would have been hard to drive away without a key because your also need a key to put it into Drive.
Did not know that now I feel a little bit better.

Don't beat yourself up too bad. A year ago I was driving a friend's Tesla using my Paak for the car and I went into a store to return an item. They wanted my credit card for the return and since I'd used Apple Pay, I reached for my phone, only to discover that it wasn't there. It was sitting on the charger mat in the car! Literally anyone could have walked up to the car and driven away. Worse yet, they would have my phone so they could wash/rinse/repeat. 🤣😳

Happily the car and my phone were still there when I ran back to the car!😅

I've been waiting for the day I do this. I started saying out loud... "unfasten seat belt, turn off car"...just to be sure. Now that I'm getting accustomed to an EV, I think I've got it under control. 😁

The honk for walk away lock is a single honk and walking away with the key while car is "on" is two honks.
Pretty sure I only got one honk, so I guess it did lock. I also was in front of one of those doorman buildings, when I pulled in the doorman was checking it out, and still was when I got back, so would potentially have a witness.

This isn't a mistake, it's a feature! I do this all the time when running in for a quick errand. Keeps the car warm/cool. Get out, honks twice, hit lock on the keyfob. If the key's not in it, it's not going to be driveable anyway. Worst case, I believe it shuts off automatically after 20min if it's running with no key.

If there is no key in the car, and you get out with it running, it will honk twice, not once. And, unless you hit the lock button, or use the keypad, or your fob, I'm pretty sure it's unlocked.

It’s also obvious because when you exit the car with it running, you get the double-honk as soon as you’re out of the car. As opposed to the walk away lock honk which doesn’t happen until you’re about 10’ away.

These honks and warnings clearly need to be changed to a speaking voice. The other day someone posted that because they disabled the reverse braking assist (as I recall), they always have a warning on the screen, so they missed that there charging door was open. Now this. Maybe this is what we need:

"Yo! Macaroni! You left me running, you idiot!" [said in a Sylvester Stallone voice]

"The charging door is open, you macaroon! Did you zip your fly?"

The car also makes an alert noise when you open the door when it's on. Not nearly as noticeable as the double honk (which I disabled in FORScan because it's really annoying), but it does still provide an alert when you open the door...

You have to turn around and use a parenting voice, "I said go the F to sleep!" Works on my car (Sheeba) every time.

Sheeba is friggin lock happy. Location based smartlock (like phones) would be nice. I sometimes go down to the garage with no fob or phone only to find I'm locked out. Never appreciated having a door code so much.
