Is there *any* fan noise during L2 charging?

I have a very early 2021 Premium AWD ER, fully up to date software. I’ve been getting by on L1 charging (I don’t drive a lot) but I’d like to upgrade.

There is someone living above my garage. Wth L1 the fan can spin up loud if I’ve been driving right before plug-in but it turns off within ~15 seconds so it’s not a problem.

Whats the situation with L2? Ignoring the possibility of that early spin up will there be any sustained fan noise? Does it depend on wattage? What if it’s still pretty warm out (say 85-90° F)? I figured I’d set it to charge overnight but I’m wary of disturbing the person living directly above.

Yes. It always comes down to watts in the end. The higher the watts, the more heat and the more cooling required (all else being equal of course).

Can you gauge how loud it is somehow for me? I mean is it like having a box fan in the room or is it closer to that maximum fan level you can hear when fast charging?

L2 at 48A is like the air dryers at the car wash.
32A is like the exhaust vent over your stove.
24A or lower can be like a room fan.

Thanks. And there is no way to control the power at the Mach E side, right? It would have to be done by the EVSE?

Huh. I have never heard any fan noise while L2 or L1 charging. Weird.

You can always swap the 14-50P on your portable EVSE that came with your car for the 120V pigtail, noise won't be a problem at all then.

I almost always charge L2 at 32 amps. Before, I got the 21P22 update, I would always get some fan noise while charging at this speed.

Now, if it’s not day time and I haven’t driven recently, the fans do not come on at all. Say anywhere in the 60s or below with no recent driving, I can charge at L2 32 amps with the fans never coming on.

Yes. It would have to be controlled at the EVSE. The included portable EVSE has no way to adjust the power, but most others like ChargePoint do.

Correct. The MME will always use the highest power level the EVSE says it can provide.

From my experience, if the car is hot when I plug it in at home on 48amps, the fans come on full blast. If I wait a few hours to plug in, pretty much no noise at all. I usually wait.
