We stopped in at the Lucid showroom in Milbrae CA on our way up to SF to watch the SailGP races this weekend. I had been wondering about the Lucid ever since they announced the Dream Edition (which they've started delivering to customers now). Here are my impressions:

  • It's a stunning design both the interior as well as the exterior
  • The build quality is top drawer as is the underlying tech.
  • 800v system will certainly make for short DCFC charging although with real world ranges of 4-500 mi (verified by Inside EV) they won't need to do that too much when on the road.
  • The "Pure" base model won't be out until later this year priced in the mid-70s
Jessop Tiedeken the sales associate we chatted with and I had corresponded with prior to arrival told us that Lucid had started out as a battery supplier to the Formula E race cars and that now all those teams use their battery packs.

The primary downside for us though was the size of the Lucid. It's a full 10" longer than our Model Y and way too big for both our garage and just the two of us. Lucid calls it a mid-sized car but it looks much bigger on the outside to us than that.

It looks much better in person than in pictures.

I can’t get past the price. Looks amazing. But so does a McLaren. And my bank account has the same thing to say about each of them.

If you have not seen my friend Jason's video on the Lucid Air, it's definitely worth a watch. So well done.

A very well-produced Lucid commercial?

If my garage was large enough and my pockets deep enough, the Air would be interesting?

Isn’t Lucid backed by the Saudi Government? If so, that definitely helps - no product development cost constraints.

It certainly looks great but my biggest issue with it is it’s a four door sedan, which at least to me is the least interesting vehicle type.

Would be great if they made a two door coupe, or a convertible, or an SUV which I believe is on the way.

People bitch about a $5k ADM. This car probably has a $30k ADM and they’re paying it. The saying is “people that can afford a Rolls-Royce don’t ask what is the mpg”. The Lucid Air Dream is a beautiful car. We can dream.

Saw one in a parking lot today. Looks great in person, very classy.

Owner picked it up this week. It’s the $150k model.

No clue why the photo is upside down, sorry.
