Can’t find a mudguard that is wide enough so I decided to DIY one using a universal mudguard. I think it turned out great.

Wheels / tires:
Ferrada FR4s, 20x10.5, 20x9

New rims came in and pulled the trigger on the pilot sport 4 suv - 295/40/20 in the rear and 265/45/20 up front on 9 and 10 inch rims. The front are a little more than half a pound lighter than the gtpe stock and the rears are about 3 pounds heavier.

Really glad to see someone with these shoes on their car, it looks damn good on your setup - I'd been eyeballing getting these rims for a first (significant) upgrade on the vehicle when it's delivered. What sort of difference did you notice in range after this changeover?

It's hard to say. I've had them for 1k miles now with just 3k miles total on the car. The first 2k miles I averaged 3.1 miles/kwh on the trip log. My average is still the same and hasn't changed in the last 1k miles. But i put the wheels on right when the temperatures dipped and I've seen individual trips with 10-33% less range, all the way down to 1.9 miles/kwh. That was with a bad rain/wind storm and full eheat going.

All in all, I would say range impact for the wheels is likely minimal (<10%), but I will need to wait until the spring for the temps to warm up again to do a better comparison.

You can expect at least a 10% hit if you are also changing the tires, and probably closer to 15% at highway speeds.

I'm so glad you brought this up. Are there wheels/tires (individually, or preferably a combination) that has been tested that will increase range? I've been looking through forums, and scanning through information about existing wheels and tires to get that data, but it seems to be sparse... Or thoroughly buried. My expertise is in building weapons systems, not tires 😵💫. Any help/insight is greatly appreciated.

There are tires that are low rolling resistance tires. The problem is there are not many, and comparing them is difficult. In general, low rolling resistance "all season" tires have worse traction and are not very good in the snow when compared to all the other tires out there. Tire companies are just now putting a lot of R&D into how to make a low rolling resistance tire that also performs well.

Ford picked the tires for the MME with low rolling resistance in mind. I seriously doubt you can replace your MME tires with another tire and get better results. It certainly is possible, but I suspect the gains would be very hard to measure. However, if you put a good all weather tire on your MME, it will decrease your range, guaranteed.

It is aerodynamics that are important for rims. Some people think weight matters. They are wrong. Not 100% wrong, but weight is insignificant in comparison to rotational resistance and general aerodynamics.

Ford designed the MME rims to be aerodynamic. The typical aftermarket rim has horrible aerodynamics. At slow speeds it has minimal impact, but once you are going 25, 35, 45+, the impact is exponential. There are very, very few rims that are built for good aerodynamics. I have searched, and they practically do not exist. A few are out there, and some have been posted in this forum, but it is not easy to find them.

Unfortunately the test data you would like to see does not exist, yet. I wish it did. Maybe Tire Rack will eventually do it when there are enough BEVs in the market to make a difference.

This info is a great summary and confirmation of what I'd gathered in bits and pieces from other sources. Cheers!
