It looks like Ford is switching to LFP batteries including for F150 Lightning and Mach-E

CEO Jim Farley just revealed this during the recent Ford Q1 earnings call:

“We’ve been working on LFP for quite some time, so let’s just leave it at that,” Farley said. “What I mean by that is, engineering LFP solutions in our first generation of products (Lightning and Mach-E), something that we see as a big opportunity and to move quickly.”
Thanks for posting. Wonder if the LFP battery will come via a future OTA update, or require a visit to the dealer...

There are a range of pros and cons to this off the top of my head.

Pros
Lower cost
Many more charge cycles
Can charge to 100% all the time with no degradation
Tolerates being "fully discharged" better than other chemistries

Cons
less range for the same weight
more weight (thus worse performance) for same range
more space for same range
Perhaps one of the biggest Pros of LFP chemistry is it's safety and thermal stability. It does not suffer from the same potential danger of thermal runaway that current Lithium Ion chemistries suffer from, and you can essentially physically puncture the cells without causing catastrophic damage such as fire or explosion.

Tesla is only using LFP batteries for standard range because LFP hold less energy per volume. Here is a company that's putting together EV battery packs with LFPs https://one.ai/

Depending on how the stats for the vehicle are changed due to LFP batteries, this will probably help the resale values on the 2021-2022 models with the more desirable batteries.

We will see a lot of change in battery technology in the next few years. Currently batteries have a useful life of around ten years. That means most EVs will have very diminished resale value after five years. Lets face it the folks that buy 8+ year old cars don't have the money to replace battery packs.

The EV industry will suffer if they don't find batteries capable of twenty years of service or at least reduce the cost of batteries significantly so cars can be re-powered.

Do you think they would stick a different battery technology in my already ordered MME?

Shame there isn't way to combine the charge/discharge rate of a capacitor for acceleration or regen, and the LFP batt to reduce cost and improve cycle rate.

No, highly unlikely. I bet these will most likely roll out first in the fleet lighting's, then eventually in the select Mach-E like Tesla has done

mostly likely only standard range trims. very unlikely for GT as it would lower the performance too much (Tesla model 3 SR dropped 0-60 from 5.3 to 5.8 changing to LFP).
