This is looking like a great move for Ford! They are the first BEV auto maker to have access to the tesla system and most likely extending their share of the EV market.
While I am not a fan of Teslas for several reasons which have no bearing on my thoughts about this news, the fact that competitors in the automotive market can agree to share ideas is a benefit not only to Ford's shareholders but Ford BEV owners as well.
My interpretation of Fords change will most like be similar to the Chinese market Mach-E's that have two charge ports already. This can easily be adapted to include the NACS adapter at the rear and still keep the CCS at the left front.
The ability to expand the charging network in the US and Canada is a big relief to those who still have range anxiety and still rely on ICE vehicles for long road trips.
Now if Tesla decides to expand even further and partner with the rest of the popular brands it will only increase the number of EV drivers going forward.

Ford's being managed into the ground =/. This isn't even the worst of it, heck their Michigan plant stopped production on the Ford Bronco (manual + everglades versions), one of their top sellers to get ready to start production of the Rangers. It seems they can't do more than one car at a time.

Honestly this is one of the smartest things they've done but I don't think it will be enough, they might have to ditch Farley all together and get someone who can get them back on track.
Totally disagree, this is the type of risk taking a CEO should make to make customers happy when their major complaint about charging was out of the company’s control. He just made Ford EVs more valuable overnight.

Okay.
  1. Wow
  2. Mmhmm
  3. The Tesla charger is the better standard and arguably the one we should be using. I say this as someone who really doesn't care for the company but all the data that came out showed it supports higher voltage adding some future proofing. It's also just a much more manageable cable. The ccs one is so freaking bulky
  4. As Tesla has released an adapter for Tesla to ccs (at least in Korea) I could see Ford having those included with cars going forward. Which would suck for dealers who have already invested.
  5. This explains why Farley is doing a Twitter spaces talk with Elon
  6. I am in the boat of all other manufacturers should also change. Ccs is a bad plug. Tesla opening their standard was arguably a move too late but better late than never.
I agree with everything you said. My point was that Ford needs to let the dealers in on this before we spend millions building a network of potentially obsolete chargers. Pick a standard and let’s move on. Adapters should be what becomes obsolete.

So the battle is lost.
A few months ago, tesla committed to add adapter to its charging station to allow other cars to charge, in order to get the government incentive...

There is only one explanation, NACS is better or cheaper or both.

The Lightning has two charging port covers. One is not in use now. In the future it will contain a NACS port.

I can’t wait until someone tries to use them both at the same time!

If you are on Twitter, check Jim Farley's feed. He will be joining Elon Musk today at 5:30pm Eastern to talk about EVs.

Watching your video now Patrick and Liv! Thanks for the OP @RickMachE !

No thank you. Have you seen the lines at Tesla stations?
Tesla's charging network is orders of magnitude better than CCS in every way. I suppose you could just choose to not use it. Get a CCS adapter and continue to use the CCS "network". Sounds like a terrible idea though. We didn't realize how much better the SC network was until we experience it for ourselves. Hopefully Ford will get things fully integrated into the vehicles infotainment system. It's a thing of beauty! Hope you find it helpful one day. :)

Ford EV Customers To Gain Access To 12,000 Tesla Superchargers; Company To Add North American Charging Standard (NACS) Port In Future EVs.

https://media.ford.com/content/ford...n-access-to-12-000-tesla-superchargers--.html

FORD EV CUSTOMERS TO GAIN ACCESS TO 12,000 TESLA SUPERCHARGERS; COMPANY TO ADD NORTH AMERICAN CHARGING STANDARD PORT IN FUTURE EVS
MAY 25, 2023 | DEARBORN

  • Starting early next year, Ford EV customers will have access to more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada, in addition to the over 10,000 DC fast-chargers that are already part of the BlueOval Charge Network. This will give Ford EV customers unprecedented access to fast-charging
  • Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning and E-Transit customers will be able to access the Superchargers via an adapter and software integration along with activation and payment via FordPass or Ford Pro Intelligence
  • In 2025, Ford will offer next-generation electric vehicles with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector built-in, eliminating the need for an adapter to access Tesla Superchargers
  • The reliable Tesla Supercharger network has already established charging corridors across the U.S. and Canada
DEARBORN, Mich., May 25, 2023 – Ford Motor Company said today it reached an agreement with Tesla Motors that will provide Ford electric vehicle customers access to more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada, doubling the number of fast-chargers available to Ford EV customers starting Spring 2024.

“This is great news for our customers who will have unprecedented access to the largest network of fast-chargers in the U.S. and Canada with 12,000+ Tesla Superchargers plus 10,000+ fast-chargers already in the BlueOval Charge Network,” said Jim Farley, Ford president and CEO. “Widespread access to fast-charging is absolutely vital to our growth as an EV brand, and this breakthrough agreement comes as we are ramping up production of our popular Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, and preparing to launch a series of next-generation EVs starting in 2025.”

Added Rebecca Tinucci, Tesla’s senior director of charging infrastructure: “We’ve spent the last 10 years building an industry-leading Charging Network that enables freedom to travel and provides charging confidence for our Tesla owners. We’re excited to deliver on our mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy by welcoming Ford owners, and other electric vehicles who adopt NACS, to our thousands of Superchargers across North America.”

A Tesla-developed adapter will provide Ford F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit vehicles fitted with the Combined Charging System (CCS) port access to Tesla’s V3 Superchargers. Ford will equip future EVs with the NACS charge port, removing the need for an adapter for direct access to Tesla Superchargers, starting in 2025.

“Tesla has led the industry in creating a large, reliable and efficient charging system and we are pleased to be able to join forces in a way that benefits customers and overall EV adoption,” said Marin Gjaja, chief customer officer, Ford Model e. “The Tesla Supercharger network has excellent reliability and the NACS plug is smaller and lighter. Overall, this provides a superior experience for customers.”

The BlueOval Charge Network is already North America’s largest public charging network with over 84,000 chargers including access to over 10,000 public DC fast-chargers. Adding more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers creates the single largest integrated fast-charge network across the U.S. and Canada, designed to significantly reduce charge anxiety for Ford customers, with automatic routing to the nearest charger and seamless billing via FordPass.

Additionally, Ford dealers are adding roughly 1,800 public-facing fast-chargers and locations to the BlueOval Charge Network by early 2024.

Glad they finally took my advice! :) Probably the first step to Ford acquiring Tesla in the next 5-7 years (once the stock comes back to earth).

This fixes so many of my charging woes so quickly. They instantly made road trips significant more convenient. In a years time. Now the argument for going Tesla is far less strong. They have a great charging network but I can get access to it with the car I actually want.

Hopefully this will light more of a fire under the butts of ElectrifyAmerica and evGO when OEM car manufacturers make moves like this one -- it's a clear repudiation that the open CCS charging networks will ever get their act together properly.
Not sure EA cares? They might even like the idea of less people using their chargers.

So does Tesla not want any of the government $$ to build magic docks?

Or are only some stations going to be retrofitted with magic dock And other stations Will just be Tesla/Ford?
I don't think they'll need to now. IIRC they only needed one other manufacturer to use native NACS to qualify for the subsidies for the regular SCs. They have that now.
