Some attention has been going to Donut Labs lately, with the imminent launch of a motorcycle using their solid state batteries.

Chinese automakers are planning to bring solid-state EV's to market in 2027.

Chery, begins limited testing later this year, in the Exceed ES sedan next year, as well as mass market availability in 2027;

Changan Automobile, starts trial installations by the end of Q3 2026;

Dongfeng Motors, is currently testing in extreme cold;

BYD and CATL, begin small-scale production in 2027.

On the US side Major OEMs that could be available here are using Factorial Energy for supply, including Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, Hyundai, and Kia. Mercedes tested it in an EQS last September and drove a 745 mile route, with 85 miles still showing in the pack.

Domestic automakers are falling behind. Ford better up their game.

They will not be “mass market” anytime soon.

Ford doesn’t make their own batteries either. Not many automakers do. They just partner with and/or buy from suppliers.

Once the technology has been proven and cost of production as well as production volume has reached a level that makes it viable over current technology, then you will see mass market adoption.

The near-future mass-market batteries that are coming online are not solid state. BYD and CATL both have newer technologies coming online in the next year or two but these are still lithium-based with liquid electrolytes. Donut Labs’ battery isn’t up to mass-market status for automobiles yet and there are still a lot of questions to be answered about it. 🤔🐩
