I could be wrong but till the Model 'T' came along even cars were too expensive rich folks play things and running about 1%-2% of the population. It will all come down to price. EV's have a lot more head room here. I read a paper recently that said that even with current technology $20 / kwh whole sale battery price at assembly level should be possible. Though this may require yet another wave of East Asian factories. with questionable practices. When I bought the 2010 Volt each kwh of assembled battery was ~$1,600 ! The Mache would have cost $ 155,000 just for batteries!
