It was in an accident. Hopefully Mach-E's batteries are more protected, but this would be a problem for current battery technology. With something like solid state batteries, it would not be an issue.

So the Model 3 has less protection between cells than expected. GM and Ford use batteries that have metallic layers between cells for cooling which also protects surrounding cells from shrapnel if one cell explodes. Tesla cells, with less metal layers, have more energy density per volume and battery weight, but I prefer a safer battery instead of a bigger one. I have samples of Tesla 21700 cells and Panasonic cells used in Ford hybrids, such as my Fusion. The construction difference is visible even for a layperson.

I have yet to read any news of Ford or GM EVs exploding or catching fire.
