I think the Y wins on the worse liftgate design. The Y hatch becomes part of the bumper. The MME is slightly higher.

But then wouldn't the Y be easier to load with the lower trunk floor? ;)

depends on how much junk you want to put in the trunk. Are you a Kardashian?

Regardless of how much you’re carrying, many people obviously buy cars like this for their added cargo carrying ability. So a lower liftover is helpful.

yes, I was being facetious. I thought the reference to a "reality" TV "star" was a hint to that. ;) I agree a lower point of entry is useful.

If I'm not mistaken, real bumpers went more or less obsolete after the 70's.
1982 for cars. That’s when the Reagan Administration lowered the bumper standards by 50%.

Trucks and SUVs are not covered by the same rules. Or any as far as I know.

On the other hand, our Leaf doesn’t have this problem at all. I guess it comes from attempts to maximize the available storage space inside an SUV-market vehicle?

I see that the Mach-E tailgate is taller and takes part of thr rear glass, just like other CUVs. Does the Model Y tailgate take up part of the glass, or is that glass roof one solid piece and the tailgate is small, like a regular trunk door?

It takes up part of he glass too. If you look close you can see the seam line in that picture.

Here's another with the tailgate open...

It looks like from this link: https://insideevs.com/news/434262/m...HH1wk6k1RUVyjCcFojByEfdfTITFDm-giuX5EsPq_uIF0 That the rear hatch panel is going to be "banged" as soon as the rear bumper is if one is not careful? See the link for details and questions.

If you do have to fix that rear hatch panel, here's some news: it's plastic.

I didn't realize how common that has now become until I googled it:

Nissan Rogue, Accura RDX, Jeep Cherokee, and who knows who else.

Not only is this much lighter for the electric assist, it also aids the embedded radar sensors as they don't need special ports.

Don't plan to put any magnetic stickers on the back of your e-Pony.

If you get rear ended then it is not your fault so shouldn't have too much impact on your insurance. If you reverse into something and damage the lift gate as well, then sorry but that is YOUR fault and I have no sympathy. If you are unsure of your surroundings, even if you rely on the reversing camera and sensors, then my advice is to get out and look before attempting any manoeuvre
Except that, in many states, an accident is an accident as far as the insurer is concerned.
