if it had detected the fob or paak in range for more than a minute or so it doesn't show the welcome lights. It is intended for when you approach the car in a parking lot when the Paak/fob first gets in range

No. They’ll turn on anywhere you approach the car. It’s just that often when a car is parked in the garage, the keys or phone are left close enough to the car that it still senses them in range, and the lights time out. The lights only activate when the mirrors are folded in (car is locked) and the car detects the phone / fob coming into range. You gotta store your stuff far away from the car and then be quick about it.

yes, but you have to be sure that the fob AND any paak phones are out of range, otherwise it doesn't meet the criteria that causes the pony lights to come on

Don't the mirrors have to be folded?

going from memory: I have walk away lock, auto mirror folding, don't have paak, and park in my driveway. Every time I leave my house and walk out to the driveway with the fob in my pocket it works. The fob sits on my desk 75 feet or more from the car until I put it in my pocket and head out to the car. It also works every time I come out of a store and walk up to the car.

Of course, it has to be dark enough outside to see them

In my case, I keep my fob in a Faraday pouch on a key rack just inside the door coming from my garage. The car is about five feet from the door and as soon as I take the fob out of the pouch the lights come on, including the pony projections and the doors unlock. As soon as I drop it back in the pouch all the lights go out and the doors lock.

I believe you also have to select "yes" when it asks you "Do you want to leave security motion sensors on?" or whatever the prompt is. I've noticed that it seems to work when I do this.
