Because his BMW does not charge quickly, Kline said even Level 3 stations like those in Canton typically do not interest him.
That really should read "Because his BMW is physically incapable of using Level 3 stations, he had no reason to be interviewed for this story." I'd be curious to see under what circumstances this owner would say that a Level 3 station "interests him" when he can't use it, since he owns a PHEV.

One day we'll get some journalist that understands EVs. Maybe.

I know the reporter and sent her an email. I wonder if she will reply. She covers our school board too. Maybe SLIGHTLY better. :D

Since this thread is about DC chargers, I have a question.

What would you consider "frequent use", as stated in the Owner's Manual?

Note:We recommend limiting the amount
of DC charges, and ending DC charges at
80% state of charge as charging between
80 and 100% can incur high charging costs
due to the time to completion. Frequent use
of DC charging could result in reducing your
battery’s efficiency and lifespan.
This is
more pronounced on the standard range
battery pack versus the extended range
battery pack.

I get that local news folks aren't EV experts. The piece overall was good, it's just that quote rubbed me the wrong way, like interviewing a vegetarian to get their review of the new butcher's shop.

I think everyone's impression of that will be different. For me I'd say normal use is a few times a month. Doing a full DC charge every day might not be great for the car.

I didn't notice the note about the high cost - that's definitely true given that Ford nerfs DCFC at 80%.

"Fast" charge is relative... those look like 50KW units.

To me, "frequent use" of Level 3/DCFC chargers means the primary fueling of the car is level 3.

I plan to make a lot of trips to LA form San Francisco (when it's safe), but that frequency is four DCFC fill-ups per round trip (which I may do once every 6+ weeks). I have a level 2 charger at home and don't see myself charging outside of the home for trips in the greater Bay Area.

Yeah it's hard to answer what "frequent" means - ratio of charging sessions by source or ratio of actual energy added from each source?

My car will get plugged in to AC nightly, but probably get a very large portion of the total energy from DC due to road trips.

One hopes she had at least a passing experience with schools and education.

I’ll take a guess: more than 50% of charging sessions or total recharging.

Yes, I thought that was vague, and maybe will be clarified when Ford does an OTA on the Manual.

Ford can be very specific, when they want to be, i.e. the ability of some F-150'S to burn E-85 gas instead of regular unleaded.

If you use E85
exclusively, we recommend that you fill
the fuel tank with regular unleaded
gasoline at each scheduled oil change.
