Europe’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) has released its second series of assisted driving grades, and despite having the best technology, Tesla’s Model 3 came away with a mediocre score. The reason? Driver engagement is a key factor and Tesla’s Autopilot system “encourages the driver to relinquish too much control,” according to the testers (via RoadShow).

This is a bit bizarre since "best technology" but coming in "sixth" simply does not jive. But anyway.

The car breeds or encourages complacency while driving is my take on the rating. That's not a good thing.

But who knows? I've been known to be wrong.

Its very simple. When car is in control, it basically is in control and u are almost a passenger, otherwise you are fully in control. There is no middle ground. Either you do everything or nothing it can be dangerous.

Just how does the NCAP propose to define "autonomous" without relinquishing driver control?

Because Tesla does not have the best technology per the report. It has the best vehicle assistance and safety backup technology and the worst driver engagement technology.

If there were three tests in a class, and your grades were "95%, 95%, and 10%, and your friend had grades of "80%, 80%, and 90%, who would have the higher grade?

The news article is misleading in my opinion. The "6th" position makes a lot more sense when you read the actual results. Tesla is rated low for "driver engagement" not because it "encourages the driver to relinquish too much control". Instead, it's rated low because, among other things, Tesla's ACC (i.e. AP) refuses to cooperate with driver input.

I summarized the actual EuroNCAP finding at https://www.macheforum.com/site/threads/euroncap-assisted-driving-grading-of-ford-kuga.1522/

There's also a link to the detailed results in EuroNCAP in the post, if you want to read them yourself.

Tesla is finally going to provide it, but only if you buy FSD (right now, that's $8k on top of AP). I find that insane.

The comment was referring to the article quote which, yes, did not reflect the report findings. The paragraph from Engadget was bizarre as stated.

It's the classic case of good technology, poorly implemented. It's why Mobileye discontinued their relationship with Tesla several years ago. They felt that Tesla's implementation and presentation of Mobleye's technology was both dangerous and misleading.
