Ford and NHTSA have announced a new safety recall that impacts 464 of the U.S. registered 2021 Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with All Wheel Drive -- built between October 3, 2020 through May 26, 2021. Until we hear from owners in other regions, it is not clear whether any Canadian or European units are also impacted.

Letters to U.S. customers are expected to be mailed out on May 30, 2022.

The corrective action is available via over-the-air Power-Up, or by bringing the vehicle to a dealer. Both mechanisms are already available since March. So I'm guessing the impacted vehicles either turned off auto-updates, or the vehicle has a separate issue that is preventing it from receiving and installing updates.

The root cause analysis for this issue indicates that Ford incorrectly published a later model year version of the PCM software to the impacted vehicles, either via FDRS or OTA (the Safety Recall Report doesn't specify which mechanism). With the incorrect software loaded, the functional safety software always reports a torque value of zero on the front axle, and may be accompanied by a MIL or wrench light on the dash.

Perhaps also helpful, the report chronology:

On March 1, 2022, an issue pertaining to a Mustang Mach-E secondary axle torque software error was brought into Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) for review.
The CCRG investigation received one report of a vehicle incorrectly detecting a lateral hazard on the primary axle causing the vehicle to enter a speed limited state on March 18, 2022. Ford is not aware of any VOQs related to this condition.
On May 6, 2022, Ford’s Field Review Committee reviewed the concern and approved a field action.
Ford is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition.

The recall is not just MME. Lots of Ford vehicles, if you read.

Ford is asking the owners of 350,000 vehicles in to take them to dealers for repairs in three recalls, including about 39,000 that should be parked outdoors
because the engines can catch fire.

Oh, the irony. If you read, I think you'll see that the article is referring to 3 different recalls. Only one of them applies to the MME.

Looks like Ford still getting the hang of OTAs as it starts to move across model years.
Its things like this that make me think past model years are going to be ramped off the OTA process entirely.

Some people have expressed expectations that OTAs for sync enhancements and other features will continue to flow to prior year cars, but I am skeptical because of the complexity required to do it safely.

Nah, they’ll get it figured out. This was such a small number of cars. They’ve got bigger fish to fry, like they still don’t know why those Expeditions are catching on fire.

I will have to wait and see if this reaches to Canada or not. My car is a May 2021 and AWD, so it fits the bill, but 464 total cases is quite small vs all the MME they sold during that time.

You are assuming that the wrong software was delivered OTA. At this time, we do not know. It might have been installed by dealers or hobbyists via FDRS. All we know is that it was installed after the vehicle left the factory.

Also, the corrective action is available OTA (or via dealer).

When I needed PCM/TCM updates on my prior vehicles, OTA was not one of my options.

I am going to keep a copy of this recall in my car and use it during my next speeding ticket

“ Officer my little pony took off on her own and I did everything I could to rein her in. Please don’t write me a ticket she’s a new pony and she’s just learning. Ford Says so. Neigh to any charges. Her initial training was in Mexico she doesn’t understand US roads yet. I believe she was in cartel get away mode”

jes sayin
