I decided to change the wheels on my MME premium AWD. I wanted to improve the look and handling. Didn't like that SUV feeling around the corners.

I went with 245-45R20 Nokian Z-Line A/S tires all around on 20 inches Fast wheels. Didn't want an agressive and melting tire.

Pretty happy with the look and handling improvements. The car is literally transformed, for something way better :)

But ... it comes at a cost. Highway autonomy took quite a plunge :(
I went from 21-22 kwh/100 km to 28-31 kwh/100 km. (cruise set @ 118 km/h, same route).
Quite an impact on expected range!

Thanks for reporting on the efficiency loss. Wow! They do look very good though...;)

2.9 Mi/KWH to 2.1. That's quite a hit.
Extended Range goes from 255 Miles to 185 Miles
Standard Range from 197 to 145.
MPGe 97.4 to 71.

Is it similar % loss at non-Highway driving?

In real terms, at my power Rate, $0.17/kWH it's only $270 USD/year if all highway.

Those look great. Nice to see someone decide not to go with black wheels for a change. ?

Quite a hit indeed! Worse than I expected actually...

It is too early to judge on city driving. It is also worth noting that I have an addiction problem with that silent push in the back feeling around town. Not the best way to be efficient ?
I am heading for some rural roads today (90km/h). We'll see how I perfom.

As for electricity cost, it is not significant where I live : paying between 6 and 9 cents / kwh, canadian ;-)
What matters the most is the range lost.

They look good! What was the weight of the new rims? Also, add this to the aftermarket wheel thread so everyone can see!

Perhaps it'll get better after you put some miles on the tires. My last set of tires was on my model 3, went from the factory Michelin Primacy MXM4 LRR tires to Pilot Sport all season 4. Initially the car went from my typical average of 3.84MPK down to 3.2. After 2000 miles or so, it more or less went back to 3.8. You do have quite a bit of an upsize though, going from 19" to 20" and +20mm in width, so I imagine you'll still have a hit after fulling breaking in the tires. Youtube reviewer Alex on Auto also went to 245mm summer tires but on 19" and he reported a 3-4% loss.

The car looks absolutely fantastic though. Is that carbonized gray? I'm so glad the dealer didn't have both an infinite blue and carbonized gray for me to choose. I'd have been totally torn if I had to pick.

Looked up the wheels specs...in all configurations (20x9.5, 20x8.5, et45, et35) they are very light wheels, around 23-24 lbs. Surprised at such a hit.

Could there have been other factors at play like weather temps requiring A/C to run more? Tires inflated to the same pressures? I agree with above as well new tires do need to break in.

I had Nokian Entyre 2.0's that, when freshly rolling out of the discount tire, could be heard picking up and flinging rocks in the wheel wells they were so sticky. Much less sticky over time.

Absolutely perfect wheels. Love the pattern, size and color. You knocked it out of the park! And like you and others, hoping the range/efficiency impact mellows out.

This tire and rim combo is the perfect size for the MME. Very nice!

Wheel weight has virtually no impact on highway range because on the highway you are moving at a steady state speed. When you slow down, the resistance to slowing down due to weight can be captured in regen braking. It is only when accelerating that wheel weight matters.

The biggest impacts on highway range are tire composition (which increases or decreases rolling resistance) and the aerodynamic design of the wheels. The faster you drive, the more resistance you get from the wheel spinning (ventilation resistance) and general aerodynamics as the wheel is pushed through the air. Which is why you see BEVs with covered wheels.

The wheels the OP put on look great, but even with low rolling resistance tires the aerodynamic hit will be significant.

All true and well said.
My wheels are very open and thus offer a great resistance to the wind.
I knew this, but I am a bit surprise by the magnitude of the effect!
