No More Road Trips

After 3.5 years of ownership I’ve finally tossed in the towel with lengthy road trips. The poor mileage under freeway conditions, unpredictable charging infrastructure, wait lines for charging, and the Walmart parking lot ambiance makes for a longer and unpleasant experience. My wife has been putting up with this up to now, but has finally put her foot down. Not doing it ever again.

This is for trips 300 miles or more. Great car for around town and shorter trips.

I’ve taken it on 458 miles from Minneapolis to central Michigan a few times. Only issues I’ve had is some wait times in Madison. Agree infrastructure needs to be improved, but I find myself arriving with less stress of driving when taking my Mustang Mach E than my ICEVs

Pulling funding? The Biden administration had billions for it, then never did anything with it. It won't get any better with the new administration, but damn, I don't think it was any better before.....

The funding is/was there. States had to come up with a detailed plan on how they wanted to spend the money. Some states were quick with plans and got approvals and money sent to them. Others, not so much.

We have taken a number of successful roadtrips of 1,000 to 2,000 miles roundtrip. I’ve found that the battery in our 2021 Premium AWD ER generally outlasts my backside or bladder. I welcome the charging stops. I bought an A2Z adapter and the addition of Tesla superchargers is a game changer. I do give thought to route planning and am a bit irked that Tesla chargers aren’t included in the Ford navigation system. I use ABRP on CarPlay and find it works just fine.

This is sort of on topic off topic so to speak. But just watching something on TV right now somebody won a model S Tesla $77,000 670 hp rated, 402 mile range, that’s gotta be the biggest mileage on the electric car or at least one of the highest mileage. That sound right?

Driven in a '22 Mustang and '23 Lightning. We're still happily road tripping every couple of weeks. We mostly take the Lightning rather than in the Mustang, but we'll still take the Mustang on a shorter road trip (500 miles or so) or into a bigger city when we don't need the carrying capacity of the truck.

Nice! We're right there with you on road trips miles (50,000+ now). More states though (37, plus we dipped into Canada at Windsor). Includes one big trip back east (6000+ miles), and another to the Gulf Coast (4000+). A few to the Southwest, and then like 25 trips between CO and NV.

I see we've got some catching up to do!
We've been considering a drive up to Acadia with some stitching back and forth between the US and Canada. Might be time to do that.

Acadia NP is one cool place. They rent bikes there you can ride on their wide carriage paths. And the berry pie at the lodge when you're done and hungry. Priceless.

I would tend to disagree with OP. Does it take a little longer, Yes. But really it's negligable to me and my situation. If I am on my own, there is no big deal. The question comes with the Family. Well hell, usually the wife can't make it 3 hours striaight regardless if it is ICE or EV; so, we are stopping either way. With a little pre-planning (that I think I enjoy; reminds me of the old AAA map days) for chargers that are solid and have some amenities (food and restrooms) it is almost a wash.

OP, it you get in the mindset you don't have to charge much past your next stop; I bet it really won't cost you much time. I believe some of the issue is people are in a GAS mindset. They're are going to "Fill Up", even though their destination may have a charging station close or on property and you only need 40% charge to get there.

I didn’t take my MME for an unexpected trip because of the nightmare my hubby had a month ago trying to find a working charger that didn’t need an adapter. The gist - a 4 hr trip turned into 8 hours, mostly looking for and then charging at stations while the cold weather drained the battery at unprecedented (to us) speeds

I didn’t take my MME for an unexpected trip because of the nightmare my hubby had a month ago trying to find a working charger that didn’t need an adapter. The gist - a 4 hr trip turned into 8 hours, mostly looking for and then charging at stations while the cold weather drained the battery at unprecedented (to us) speeds

Plugshare app (works on apple car play)or Plugshare.com also I map out my route with "A Better Trip Planner" app or website. It will also give you charger info. However, plugshare seems to be more informative on the actual chargers. And, don't forget Tesla. If you have the adapter, Telsa's "Super Charger Map" (as well as plug share) will let you know which SC you are allowed to use......Handy trick (or hack as this gen says). Set your filter on plug share to 250kw and then it will filter out the Tesla chargers that are not usable. Hope this helps
