Not all charging station assholes drive ICE

@EELinneman what did you do after taking the photo? I am curious. Did you politely knock on the window and say "Any chance you could please move over so I can charge on the right hand side" or did you just leave it alone, not wanting to take the chance of an escalated issue".

I find with people's lack of tolerance and anger issues, unless I am desperate to get a charging spot and there is nothing else around, I am not going to take the risk and ask someone to move. I would rather drive a few minutes to the next charger, then roll the dice as to what is going to happen next. As I reflect on what I have just written, I find it a sad statement, that in this modern day and age of enlightenment, that a simple request for someone to please move, is not something can be done without possible consequences. Do you think that our ancestors had the same issue when someone asked them to move their horse carriage or horse over a bit so they can get to the hitching post or water trough? Of course, people are people throughout time, good and bad and somewhere in-between.

I ended up backing into the spot on the left of the photo and plugged in. I walked over to say hi to the couple with the VW to the right and out of this picture. They were the ones whom this tool gave the finger to. He was busy playing games on his phone, and I didn't want to get in an argument. He was in the car and saw, and I assume heard, the conversation but didn't step out. That was best for everybody.

What I was trying to find out is if the latest patches applied by my dealer last week improved DCFC above 80% and it looks like they did. In general, I've run into some pretty good people at charging locations, so am not taking this one particular asshole as a trend.

I don't know how to answer your question regarding the past. I guess there have always been assholes, just more today, perhaps. I believe that we are under more stress now than in the last 20 years, but likely not more stress than 75 or 100 years ago from the stories I have heard. Two years ago, my wife and I got to see a guy have a complete hissy fit that the wireless on a flight was not working. I compare this to my great grandfather who lost a wife and 3 children in a fire but still milked the cows the next day. Regardless, we all individually choose how to react to these types of situations, and I think I did the right thing. There are some "special" people in the world, but it doesn't mean that they are special to you or me. Choose where to spend energy and with whom.

When my son graduated from Duplo to Lego… that was a rude awakening for me. The 1Xs… not the 1Xs!!!!

I was thinking about this too (agree). All the way to the back and right up front are no good. I think putting them in the middle of the parking lot would be a happy medium. Hardly anything but Tesla's on the coast in NH. Hardly any (fast) charging stations either. The whole Foods near my office has one EVgo charger. I like to park on that side of the lot whether I need to charge or not just to see who is charging or what other EVs are around. Waiting for the day an EV is parked in one of the two spots and not charger just because it is close to the entrance. I think (some) people treat EV charging spots like handicapped parking where the whole car functions like having a handicapped space.

The Nero guys are ALWAYS the biggest assholes I've found...Every single time...

My last road trip I ran into 2 of them. The first is at a 4 stall EA site and all 4 are taken (I'm 1 of the people charging). Theres another car waiting. These people are sitting in their Nero at 95% still letting it charge at an abysmal 9kW too... I guess ignorance? People don't realize that last 5% takes forever and it's rude to wait for it?

The second one was at a 3 stall EA site and all 3 were occupied yet again (1 being me). Same situation as before car was at 95% and there's someone waiting to charge. Guy is in the car. The eTron next to me finishes charging and leaves and another etron pulls into that spot. Then as I'm about to leave the Nero hits 100%. The guy literally gets out of the car, unplugs it, and goes inside Target. Leaves the car in the space. Theres a chevy bolt there waiting to charge too. I could not believe it.

It's SO rare that last 5% will make a difference. Of course it possibly could and I get that...but why does literally every Nero EV driver charge to 100? Not the first two I've seen doing this just the first two with a full charger.

People have the right to charge to 100 but it's just not courteous unless you ABSOLUTELY have to.

I agree its rare. When I got to my destination I was less than 10%. Did I need to go to 100? Not then, but next time it may be windy and then I'd be screwed, so best to do it just in case.

But not literally every NIRO EV does that. That's like saying, why does literally every BMW cut me off in traffic....Hmm, I think I just ruined my own argument.

I had a similar situation in LA at Walmart parking. Even worse, the guy blocking two spots was in Mach-E, and he wasn't even charging.

My thought is… there are definitely some that are jerks regardless of what they drive, but where should new EV owners get a tutorial on charging etiquette? The more new EV owners there are the more ignorance there will be. Not trying to be an arrogant EV owner or anything, but I don’t think people are going out of their way to learn or research best practices before public charging, and a lot of this isn’t exactly common sense. Maybe that EA screen can be put to use for a tutorial … oh wait, the computing power in these things will freeze up running Minesweeper.

I’m one of those newbies trying hard to learn all the technical aspects AND the etiquette stuff too but it’s not easy! I’ve encountered some very friendly helpful folks at charging stations but also a few angry and frankly scary people who mostly just wanted to make me feel stupid or shame me into leaving, which is what I ended up doing. (Even learning how to post with quotes or reply, etc on this forum can be intimidating - I don’t think I’m doing it right at all!) There’s so much content which is great but also totally overwhelming. Anyway my point is, thank you to those of you who are able to express a little patience with us latecomers who are trying but who still screw it up sometimes!
